Hey y'all. Can you give me a good rundown of the differences between the FT and the 1fz petrol? Have the opportunity to pick up a 95 FT import with 230xxx km on the dash. Super clean. But yeah just a good ownership experience/rundown of how different they are in maintenance and overall livability. Curious to hear your thoughts, I couldn't find a thread that's really to the point of the FT vs petrol. Anything helps thank you!

Had* and picked it up as it's in my pfp. Figured be nice to read up on owners experiences especially in near 2025 and how it's been for everyone

I think 1HDT may be hard to find parts for. 1HZ seems much more readily available (at least, internationally.)

1FZ isn't a bad motor, although the valve stems and headgaskets are a nuissance. I couldn't tell you about the 1HDT. I would want to know how cold starts are like with those motors. Some diesels are a pain to get going in the cold, and for some generations of vehicles gas wins out for us.

While I was firmly in the diesel-must-be-better camp for a while, I'm now seeing a lot of cases where I'd prefer gas. Though admittedly, that might not be with a Landcruiser.

I had a 1994 1FZ with a auto transmission I drove for almost 15 years. The vehicle was trouble free for me and it was a solid motor. I had both 33's and 35's on it, either tire was slow and the gas mileage was poor when the power level was taken into account. I finally got tired of it and got a 1HDT powered one with a 5 speed. It feels like it has about 3x the power and gas mileage is about twice ( I get around 20mpg). Personally I'd never go back to a gas powered Land Cruiser, the diesel motors drive nicer, do better on gas and seem just as reliable. I've had my 1HDT for 3+ years now and have had zero issues with it.

Parts are absolutely not an issue anywhere globally for Toyota diesel or gas models.

Whatever floats your boat.

Look at value for money and overall condition.

I miss my 1hd-t hdj80, loved it.

Haven't had it for 15 years. Couldn't justify the premium purchase price of a 30year old diesel to replace it.

I think finding a good condition rig that ticks other boxes is more sensible than fixating on gas vs diesel.
For example, 5 speed manual is the first box to tick for me, after that, condition throughout.

Ps, if you can't find threads discussing this, you haven't searched. It comes up regularly

If the driving experience is part of the appeal, 5 speed manual is where is at. Auto is a deal breaker.

Both engines can be upgraded for more power.
The diesel will make 20-30% more power and torque with just an exhaust system and tune up.

This thread is good read: Should you buy an imported 80 Series Land Cruiser in the US? - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/should-you-buy-an-imported-80-series-land-cruiser-in-the-us.1350196/#post-15717886

Overall, I'd factor in a serious baseline into the purchase price, though you may not need do do it all straight away at 230000kms. FT's usually need minimum fuel pump rebuild, injectors, valve clearances around 300000kms - I just did mine. I get around 650kms to a tank (95ltrs). I decided on an auto over a manual this time for the long term (have had a manual 80 before and got sick of it).

But yeah as others have said, whatever floats your boat. For me Diesel>Petrol, always.

How much of a hassle was rebuilding the FP, injectors, and valve clearances?

Check out the Diesel Tech section of the forum.
Everything you could possibly need to know is there somewhere.

Valve adjustment on the hd-ft is straight forward. Follow the FSM.
Find the 1hd-ft FSM/repair manual in the RESOURCES section in the forum menu

I agree with mudgudgeon, should be done by a shop... I had my pump, injectors, valve clearances done by a shop. While they were in there they did the water pump, thermostat and cambelt and then you know it's all done. You may be able to get a re-built fuel pump off-the-shelf, like we can here in New Zealand, if you wanted to install yourself.

You really Need to drive a 1FZ with Auto to Understand how slow it is.
Expressway = Constant Skinny Pedal
The 2UZ is a much better Motor. Makes Lots of Low End Grunt, but that is the 100-Series Cruiser.

The Mileage is about 13mpg which also Sucks.

FZJ80s are Thirsty & Slow but they will Climb Trees and be Passed on to your Kids and they Literally Feel like a Tank.

Have had a few gasser units, even a 1997 with Supercharger, but Diesel is the way to go.
4hours of run time for gas 6 to 8 hours of run time for diesel.
No issues running water, less if you add the dorkel.
A diesel either starts or it doesn't, very easy to figure out why.
Really don't leak oil, no engine codes etc.
Currently running a factory Hdj80 with factory 5speed h151, a hzj75 Aussie spec with h55f, and a hdj81 with the fully hydraulic A442f.
Never going back to gas/petrol.
Parts are easy peasy and last.
