Hello everybody. I met a few of you ONSC guys at URE in early December - I was the guy without doors in a 40-degree 2-hour commute - and got turned on to the forum here - can't stop reading. I'd like to introduce myself and begin the 'get acquainted' process...

I'm in Charlotte, NC and regularly cover from Greenville, SC to Raleigh and even Lynchburg, VA for work. I've wanted an FJ40 since the 80's but never had the luxury of money or time. Music and life took all my resources. Fast forward to a year ago and I ended a long search for a 40. Has a horse of a V8 in it and is otherwise in great shape. The PO's probably never even had it in the dirt (probably didn't wanna scratch the sharktooths!). It needs a little attention here and there but is doing great as a daily driver. I'm learning a new skill set working on the thing and that is part of the dream. Had my inaugural dirt run (and broke nothing!) at URE while, by chance, ya'll had your December weekend, and I had a blast. Spoke with David, Josh, Darin and others who told me about ONSC. Now I'm looking forward to meeting many more of you and spending more time wrenching and in the dirt. There's lots that I want to do to the 40, but not much that it needs - I guess that's a truck guy thing. PO did some weirdness that hampers approach/departure angles that I'm gonna try to knock out this winter.

Anybody got any thoughts on putting my battery back in the engine compartment with fiberglass fenders and a V8? It's in a steel box between the bumper and grille right now. I saw a shock tower mount online somewhere...

Also looking to get rid of the body-mounted tire/2x-can carrier and put on a proper rear bumper. Current bumper is set up as an air tank but is mounted real low... Gonna have to see if somebody can remount it and add a spindle for a tire carrier swing out while retaining the tank feature.

Or maybe I'll just give up on the 40 and try to figure out WTF smilies, icons and avatars are for. Damn computers.

Welcome.

It should be too easy to put the battery back under the hood, even if something had to be fabbed up.

Fabbing up the rear should be easy also.

I am the one that seen you up by the mud puddle on my dirt bike that day.

Welcome to the club..... lots of great people here. Some time in the next month we will do a cruiser get together again in Charlotte.

Welcome, nice looking 40. I can help you out with any fabrication needs you may have.

welcome aboard John! Great looking 40, perfect setup for a DD and a lil weekend fun.

so is it green or black?

nice rig....i'm liking the all black look...(- wheels...not a fan of black wheels)
what part of charlotte? weddington here...

Angerhater,
Off Providence Rd between Arbo & Cotswold. Actually heading toward Weddington later tonight, probably after your bedtime - I'm still 8 hours from home right now.

Hoping for some sun and warmth towards the weekend. I'm off for a while so anybody let me know if there's a beer in their future and I might even buy it for ya!

Welcome John, I had the chance to check out your 40 at the Outpost and it is very cool! I'm looking forward to what you do with it, and hopefully you'll be a regular at club events!

Not too sure as i have not seen it in person but it looks like the top would mount to your fender. Think you would be better off just fabbing something up if you are trying to stay away from the fenders.

Welcome and nice 40...

On the battery, why no just mount it inside?

Are you thinking 'inside the vehicle'? Tell me what's on your mind, please...

The MAF mount has the tray tying into the PS shock mount and the PS inner fender. The BTB mount hits the PS frame and PS inner fender. My concern is that the fiberglass fender won't adequately be the secondary support for the leveraged weight of either one or two batteries without vibrating/tearing them up. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think steel would be a better fender material for this. I'd lean toward the BTB frame-mounted tray at this point since I think it's a stronger primary mounting point than the shock tower. I could always mount another on the DS if I need a dual battery in the future. Or just say screw it and find some steel fenders. But I bet I'm just missing a really obvious solution.

I am sure there is a way to fabricate a support that would not tie into the glass fender yet allow you to use the same position. Just a matter of figuring it out
