Hey guys I have mikes hj60 the plan is to get this truck running and back on the road for my parents. My parents had to give up on their much loved Bj60 due to frame rust issues and a vehicle inspection it wasn’t worth saving but this one is. It has quite a few things that need doing it needs the motor issues figured out, a vehicle inspection, rear body, windshield frame, door and rear wheel well rust. Also all the easy problems like brakes to pass a vehicle inspection

Got the head off today and here is what I found. I need a little diesel advice.

The head gasket compression ring has these weird cracks on all cylinders at the pre cup edge. First the Headgasket cracks.

So also the head has visible cracks from the pre cup to the exhaust valves on cylinders 2345 but not 1 and 6 no cracks between the valves or elsewhere

So the cylinder bores look in great shape factory hone marks no lip yaadda yada... my theory is the cracks in the head gasket caused the low compression. My question is why did that gasket crack like that (the pre cups arnt proud of the block), also I’m planning on slapping a new gasket in there and running that head till this 400,000k motor has more issues and then swapping in another runner 2h anyone think this head is too cracked? I have seen 3b’s running with similar cracks with no obvious signs.

Thanks!

Come now, it was in great shape. Look at all that pristine metal.

I was wondering if you snagged that 60, how is it other than the dodgy 2h? I had a few moments of temptation over it as a place to put my 12ht, but I'm feeling a bit cruisered up at the moment.

I have no useful input on the 2h, other than that Dan Martz had several of them in one of the K towns.

I've seen weird things like that happen to head gaskets when they've been over-torqued. Also, like you say, quite a few 3B and 2H cylinder heads have cracks and are running fine. As long as the crack's don't extend into the coolant passages.

These cylinder heads are hard to find now and can be very expensive.

The fact that the pre-cups are pretty mint means that motor has been apart before fairly recently. It could just be it was improperly re-assembled at that time (over-torque).

There is a guy on this forum ( coldtaco ) who did a small run of MLS head gaskets for the 2H. If I was you, I'd try to get my hands on one of those, and throw that motor back together.

Good score tho. Any pictures of the rest of the truck?

All the pictures I have of it so far definitely will be more to come.

That makes perfect sense I’m sure your right, it does look like the head has been off before. Thanks!

Oh wow! Those sure are some spectacular cracks you have in your cylinder head. Judging by how visible the cracks are in the head it leads me to believe that this engine was very over fueled by applying too much throttle to compensate for the low compression. The portion of the head gasket got so hot that even the steel fire ring has begun to fracture due to the thermal stresses.
As for getting a new head, during my search to repair my own engine I found that you can get 2H cylinder heads off of Amazon!
I wish you all the best for this coming rebuild :)

Has anyone resurfaced a pitted rocker or had it done with success at a local shop?

Not sure what the rockers for a 2h are worth but my 3b I believe I payed 80$ each Toyotapartsdriect and a 2h has a few more!
