Geolander M/T 's

Is anyone running Yokohama Geolander M/T 's ? Been looking at different tire options for the 80 . ( when i find one ) I read an article in JP mag that gave
them pretty high marks overall. I was running BFG mud terrains on the HEEP
and was pretty happy . any thoughts?

Funny as hell . I've been to the Yokohoma dealer in town , and they won't even sell them to me . Take me back to the trailer they're sitting in .. then the run guys begins in with .. "They wear pretty quick ya know ... man they're heavy ... "


Funny as hell . But convinced me ..

I run BFG M/T's . Its a great tire .. quiet as hell for an MT , looks good .. fairly easy to balance .

Yes Ive heard that they wear fast , Ive also heard that they stick to the rocks like glue.

The main thing that people complain about is wear. If you don't care about that, then you might be happy. Soft rubber probably explains the fast wear and stickiness.

How are you going to handle the fact that they're directional? Have 2 spares? Have 1 spare and run the tread "backwards"? Or have a non Geolander M/T spare?

You didn't ask, but I like the Goodyear MT/Rs.

Yokohama had the 30 day trial so I put them on. They look very cool but I felt EVERY lug from 0-15 MPH and from 15 MPH to dead stop. I could not stand it. Those lugs are pretty wide apart and you'll feel it. If your LC is a daily driver, just keep that in mind.

I got 27K miles in Ohio climate which are not that hot. My friend in California only got 12-15K out of his set. I agree with airlaird that you could feel everty lug and they do vibrate quite bad. I replace that with a set of MTR and they are much much better for dailly driver. I would look at Firestone Destination MT if 285/75R16 is the size you are looking for. Unfortunatly they don't make larger size yet.

A cool looking tire, definatly not for the 80. (wear).

Might try the 35's on my 40. Pretty reasonable at $160 a pop.

I guess the 0-15 feeling every lug doesnt sway me much, comming from a 92 ---- with 33" BFG MT's and a assortment of aftermarket accesories , 4" lift , loc-rite rear , etc. Any BFG guys out there with 95-97 FZJ80 s

Uh convert- 33" BFGs aren't exactly the harshest riding tires around...

And you definatly do not feel every lug at low speeds like you do with some M/T tires.

damn those aftermarket accessories, I just can't stand the ride at low speeds with them

If you like the directional look of the geolander, maybe take a look at the procomp xterrains. That's what i run and they ride great and look pretty cool. As far as a spare it won't matter if you run it backwards to limp home or even for a day or two, and it's a spare who cares the brand, etc just as long as it's the same height. When my 305 xterrains wearout, I'm going to 35" nitto mud - one word for those tires......SWEET!!

X terrains look cool, yes. Not so cool worn out, or with punctured sidewalls.

Way soft rubber, grips well, wears fast, punctures easily.

which tires are you talking about since you quoted the xterrains and the nittos?? just curious because any tire looks like ass when it's worn out. I've never wheeled my 80 but a handful of times but my mini pick with xterrains gets a beating on the trails and the street.....never had a sidewall issue.

about wear....anyone can look at the tires and know they an't going to last, but hey they look sweet and if you're paying that much for tires money spent isn't a concern.

oh and I have about 9k on my 80's and they are just starting to show wear, mostly the edges of the front tires. My truck has about 15k and tons of trail miles and they are 1/4-1/2 worn out....I'm happy with that, even when my MT Baja belted tires wore out at 20k I was happy cause they could grip like nothing else.

If you have no need for tough sidewalls, and don't mind fast tread wear, then there is no problem .

I've seen a few X-terrains with the s*** ripped out of them (mostly from tellico-sharp roots/rocks), and a few more that don't hold air well for no particular reason.

I run a set of 315 open country M/Ts on my LX450 and love them. I think as far as a daily driven tire they are the best that I know of. I have owned a few 35's (BFG M/T and A/T,Cepek MCII,Wild Country RVT,Swamper SSR, Swamper LBT-34", Swamper Boggers) and have a few friends that run Good Year MTR's. I really like the mtr's too but the toyo's have the same sidewall strength with a unbelievable ride, My third pick would be the bfg's, they ride nice, get good traction but lack in sidewall strength. I think a guy needs to ask himself a few questions before buying a set of tires such as: How many miles are they going to be on the paved road vs. off road? How many miles a year am I going to put on these tires, and am I going to afford to buy another set if I decide I made the wrong decision 500 miles down the road( I bought a real cheap set of boggers from my buddy that way). If you rig is purpose built then buy the most extreme thing out there but if its driven daily to keep in mind that a bad ride can make you hate your rig the 75-90% of the time your on the pavement.

I ran them for 40K miles, though I replaced all of them at one point or another through Discount Tire warranty. The 0-15 mph rumble is a MAJOR issue, far worse than anything else I have run. BFG's for me.

It doesn't have Every Tire out there but has ALOT of them. And they are Reviewed and Rated by Us Consumers. Not Sure if you already knew about the site, but figured I'd throw it up there.
