I was in your position as well, trying to decide between 03 versus 02. I purchased knowing I would immediately put 8k miles on mine, and since I wasn't sure I'd keep it long term, and since I didn't want to tie up 20grand, so I went with an 02. Yes the 4 speed and old dash make it feel Iike a time machine, and I may lose out on 1mpg, but I never feel like I overspent. I ended up really liking the rig, and I may upgrade to a newer and lower mileage LC at some point, but if you are new to LCs, the older and less expensive alternatives may be more justifiable.

I use mine for a long commute on country roads with a ton of deer and snow drifts and I work weird hours so the safety and security outweigh the s***ty mpg.

Drove a v8 x5 and thought I was In a Kia...

My 2 pence

Also, if you have kids, you may want LATCH system for carseats. 02 has it, not sure about 01, and suspect no go in 2000

That's a good point as well. I do have kids (or will have plural - have a 1 year old and wife is pregnant) - and I'm slightly concerned about the LATCH system only being behind the driver and in the center (as opposed to the outer passenger side seat.) Any feedback on whether there's any real safety concerns there? Not sure if I also want the to-be 18 month old sitting right on top of the newborn. :)

I have been looking to pick-up a 98 or 99 TLC as an extra car / 'project'. I have found a perspective rig relatively close by and am looking for a little feedback on the deal. Details are:
- Stock 1999 w/ locker and 160k miles
- 2 owner, accident-free, with clean Carfax
- TB and WP completed at 95k; will probably do again Soon if I purchase
- Paint and body in excellent condition
- interior could use some attention; 2 seats are coming apart at seems

Negotiated price is $8500 which seems ok compared to Kelly Blue Book. Is this price inline with the TLC market in general? Any other thoughts that can help in finalizing my decision.

Thanks

2000 really seems like the tipping point where the rigs can be found <$10k. $8500 for a '99 in decent shape seems like a decent deal, particularly for my part of the country.

I just sold my 96 LC that was pretty well moded, I have my 00 LX 470. I love how it handles in the snow, and love the ride quaility. Since I have sold my 96 it really got me thinking that I would like to get into an 04-07 LC and trade in my 00 LX 470. Part of the reason I was thinking is that I really don't need AHC, after looking for a while I noticed most of the 06-07 LC's have AHC in them??? How hard would it be to find one without AHC? Also how is the ride difference with no AHC? Right now I think I really want black ext. with tan int. I wish you could get grey ext. with tan int.

I am not in a huge hurry to buy anything and want to make sure I get exactly what I want but I feel that if I get a 06 or 07 it is going to have to have AHC in it.

I drive an 80 but am currently shopping for a '99 - '00 100 series for my wife. We really don't want to spend over 10K but I haven't seen anything in my area that even comes close. I see a lot of people selling at or very near KBB. Generally speaking, how much less than KBB would you guys expect to pay? If you were selling how much would you expect to come down? Here's an example of what I'm talking about. Great looking vehicle and he's asking KBB value:

04 LC Value

Hi all! These forums have been a huge help as I look to buy my first Land Cruiser...I have a question about one I'm going to look at later this week.

I found an 04 with about 140K miles on it that I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on. Looks like it has really good maintenance records - regular oil changes and timing belt/water pump done at 116k. There is a gap on service records from 120k to 140k though. Also, it looks great in the pics and the seller has sent me many additional photos and they all look good. Assuming the truck looks and drives good in person, does $18k sound reasonable?

Thanks for the feedback!

Mike

Having a car crisis the more I think about picking up an '00-'01 LX. I'm concerned at altitude the truck is going to be too slow, particularly with the 4spd and larger tires and expedition gear etc.

I'd consider looking at an '03+ but the prices are 75% higher for what seems like not a lot more truck, plus the lack of flexibility with the nav/stereo/electronics is a huge detractor for me.

What would you guys do in my situation? Would a TRD supercharger change the lack of power equation on a '00-'01 truck to the point where it would be less of an issue, even with 35" tires? Input appreciated. Thanks!

I think your need for speed lies in your wife's ride. Even the 07's aren't rockets, but I think are better than first gen 100's.
There's a super charger up on ebay for one right now. Quite spendy though.

As far as the 03, yeah there is a hefty premium on 03-07, and even more so for an 07 with under 80k on it.
Lots of changes in 03, but I'm not a fan of the nav system at all. I really hope someone nails down an aftermarket trim ring that will take the dial controls and an aftermarket double DIN.
