I thought I saw a link somewhere for a gear ratio calculator....

I'm running the stock gears now with the 700r tranny and LC transfer case on 37" Mtrs.

The only time that I am able to use overdrive is cruising down the highway around 55-60, in town it seems sluggish and constantly hunts for the right gear, so I run it in 3rd gear most all the time.

I was thinking of 4.88s, but I would like the option of being able to run a 33-35 tire if I choose to do so later on. Would this still be an option with 4.88s?

Does anyone have a similar set-up? recommendations?

add up what you have.

tranny ist gear+tcase low range+axle ratio..

There you go.

35's with an overdrive and 4.88's will be spunky.

Soooooo....

3.06+2.27?(LC case)+4.10=9.43:1?? :o

So what is a respectable ratio? Also I plan on replacing the stock LC case with an Orion when funds permit...:D

sorry, multiply them, not add

Glad this isn't a math quiz.. :grinpimp:

ok so that puts me around 28:1 then vs. 112:1 with an Orion.

Auto

You can usually asume another 2:1 torque multiplication from the torque convertor in the auto tranny. So that would put you around 56:1.

i do not like the way the gear ratios in my 700R4 w/4:11's and 35's..
Around town im always going between 3rd and 4th.. and i never use overdrive, unless im on the highway.. even then the RPM's are real low..

Id like to go with 4:88's but 5:29's would work too.. Any one have input on the Strength issues with that low of gears?

Isotel do you have a tach in your 40? what kind of rpms do you see in 4th around 50 mph?

I thought this geaing issue is a little bit about taste .. I prefeer go slower on HWay but pretty strong off road ..

My recomendation would be 4.88 ..

With An auto you you want to go for about Half what you want with a stick rig. Around 50:1 is decent for an auto.

IMO 37" and 4.88 are pretty good combo. They'll have a nice city feel (highway will be ok too, don't want it too low) and the offroad with low is going to ample, exceptional after orion case. Not a competition or a sole offroad truck right? If so go 5.29 or more.

right now, yer talkin road use....high range...
3.06 x 1 x 4.10 = 12.546
3.06 x 1 x 4.88 = 14.933 - 16% drop in highway rpm
3.06 x 1 x 5.29 = 16.187 - 23% drop in highway rpm

I've got 4.10's still in my FJ40 with the 37's and the 700r....granted, my road use is near zero, but it's acceptable....I don't see OD much tho, but with the manual valve body setup in the tranny, I drive it differently too...

the 4:1 in my D300 is NICE on the trails, even with the 4.10's diffs...no complaints there.

i dont have a tach.. but the engine feels like its idleing in OD at 50.. No power at all.. i have to downshift to pull any sort of slight grade, or accelerate..

like woody said its all about how you use it..

i think 37's and 5.29's with a 700r4 would be a good combo on the street.. and may save me from wanting the 4:1 kit in my t-case for a while..

i would go with the 4.88s and not the 5.29s if u want to go with small tires at times it would be too low geared. And you will want tire speed for muddin. This is a mud site isnt it? But it also depends how much power you have.
