However some guys on the VW forum claim that all new GL5's also meet GL4 specs and any new GL5 will not destroy a trans, is that true? If the book tells me GL4, that what I will do!

True-I am pretty sure that all GL-5 gear lube has buffered chemistry and prevents problems with brass syncros. The Chevron Delogear says GL-5, GL-4 right on the pail.

I've got Mobil1 75w-90 in my new H55f right now, and I'm not worried about the syncros.

I've run the cheapest gear lube I can get in my SM420 for years, and those syncros are fine as well.

Bottom line---Non-problem.

I use Mystik JT7, I like it becuase it's red and changes to brown if you get any contaminates in it or if it needs changing.

I also toss in a quart of Lucas, it has a "sticky" quality the keeps lube on the gears.

Another data point. I just bought a pail of Coastal 80w-90 at Autozone. It says GL-3, GL-4, GL-5 right on the label. It also meets every spec known to man, at least if the label can be relied upon.

I use the Redline stuff also, I think I used the 75-90 NS because it can be used in both the gearbox and the differential. I think the Redline MT-90 would also be a good choice as it's GL-4 and Redlline claim it's popular for Toyotas.
