92 fj80 Gear oil leaking from rear lug nuts, I removed the lug nuts and gear oil started coming out. What causes this?
?

Gotta be your axle seals at the root of it all. But sound like your drive flange gasket is leaking too. Time to get dirty!

I'm guessing half a cup came out..stinks like gear oil and kinda thick. I'll check the diff fluid tomorrow.

You have gear oil inside your brake drums now, so I wouldn't let this go too much longer. You'll need to replace the brake shoes in any case.

This is an involved job. You need to replace the rear axle seals on a semi floating axle. Chances are the reason the seals went is because the bearings are starting to go. I would order axle seals and wheel bearings for the rear.

These are c-clip axles which are accessed through the rear diff cover. Remove the pinion cross pin, push the axle toward the diff and the clip will drop out. Keep the c-clip with the axle it came from as they come in different thicknesses.

You'll need to fabricate or purchase a bearing puller to remove the wheel bearing that is pressed into the axle tube on each side. The new bearing can be driven in with the correct size socket and a rubber mallet. Lube with fresh gear oil.

The entire procedure is documented step by step in the FSM.
USE OEM PARTS.

I was looking at my fsm last night, just wanted to diagnose the problem before I start ordering parts. Thanks guys, time to get dirty.

Here's a picture inside my brake drum.:bang:

Looks like its coming from the hole that next to the studs. When I spin the axle I hear a sound, must be the bearings? The other side is nice and dry.
The thing that is on top of the hole leaks a little bit when I took the shoe off.

Its not the axle seal it's the wheel cylinder, had someone step on brakes and one of the boot leaked like a fountain. Should be an easy fix. Thanks guys!

Well, without a drum it will hyperextended the brake cylinder and shoot out fluid.

I'm hoping that's all it is, but I would take a closer look at the back side of that hub first.
