My gauges were working for the most part until I blew a fuse this week. i did the easy thing, and just grabbed a std fuse at radio shack (20A). although it was not the exact fuse i had in there, i figured it would work for a few days. Not 20 seconds after starting the cruiser up, i smelt something burning, and my voltage was running at about 10v. I checked the fuse, and it was extremely hot. I pulled it out, and the ends had melted off. :whoops: The gauges did work until i pulled the fuse.

Ok, so I figured i got the wrong fuse. ran to the auto parts store as it was on the way home and got the right fuse. put it in and nothing, no gauge function. :censor: Looking at the fuse, it looks like the filament is deforming, but not melting. :(

I think this is telling me that i have a short somewhere. Suggestions?

i think i found the issue. the short appears to be in the fan switch. When the fan is turned on the fuse blows. when the fan is not on, everything is fine. Now the blower motor does not function, or seem to have power, so i guess i need to follow the wires looking for a short.

The short is down stream (toward ground) of the switch. It could be the motor, switch or wiring in that order of liklihood.

Start by disconnecting the motor and see if the fuse blows when you turn the switch on.
