The A440 is starting to act up on my 88 FJ62 (stock 3fe, OME, 33x12.5). Reading ~180k on the odo, but after a look at a carfax (after I bought th LC, but before I bought my 83 sr5 pickup) there is a bit of odometer vagueness, so she could easily be over 200k.

I was driving up a steep road for about 2 miles and like usual, i was loosing power in third about half way up. I manually shifted down to 2nd, but near the top noticed a bit of slipping followed by a "whirring" sound for about 20 seconds. I immediately pulled over and the noise stoped. I started again and made the last 100 meters in 1st. Had no further problems on the way home, but it is mostly downhill. This is the first time I had any symptoms like these.

After searching around here and through many of Rodney's messages, the "sound" I heard can best be matched to the trans pump running dry.

OK, I had just checked the trans fluid when I fueled up about 20 minutes earlier and it was reading in the top of the hot zone (after about 20 minutes of surface road stop and go driving).

I just changed the fluid about a month ago when I noticed that the transfer case was low, and the transmission was high. I'm wondering if there is still a good portion of gear oil in the tranny... but i thought that should be a slow process.

So, I'd like to drop the pan this weekend and do a flush to see if that helps, which brings me to the reason for this post:

1. Do I need to replace the pan and/or filter gaskets?

2. Do I need the a440 manual for this or is is pretty straight forward

3. What is the torque spec on the pan bolts?

I just ordered a trans cooler from summit and am looking into a temp gauge setup to help extend and monitor what life might be left.

We're planning our first trip into Plumas NF (Antelope Lake, ~250 miles up to 5000ft) here in Norcal in about two weeks and i'm a little concerned that she might not be up to it.

4. Last question... what do you think? Is my 62 gonna make it?

Thanks to all and sorry for the long post...

1. You can probably get away with using the same gasket, but gaskets are cheap. Get a new one.

2. The FSM has pictures and diagrams of how to pull the filter out and clean it. You don't have to pull the valve body. It is very easy and you don't need the A440 book. I think the Chilton's manual is even pretty clear.

3. Dunno, I don't have my FSM right now. I can check it tomorrow if you haven't gotten an answer yet.

Sounds like low fluid to me. I know this sounds like a dumb question, but you are checking the fluid with the truck running, right?

I don't think the A440 and t-case exchange fluid. I haven't ever seen or heard of it.

Swap the transmission over to synthetic fluid if you haven't already. It dissipates heat more efficiently than the Dino stuff.

Start putting some change back, you can make it last a good while longer but once they start acting up they go bad eventually. I made mine last almost 2 years, but by the time it was toasted I had to use 4 low to back into my driveway.

if it is in the FSM then I should be ok...

Not a dumb question as I did make this mistake before, but not this time. With the engine running, after shifting through all the gears, fluid is right at the upper bound of the 'hot' range.

I'm not sure that this was happening, but here is where i got the idea:

thanks for the advice greg... this is my first cruiser and people like you have been awesome in helping a new guy out. hopefully i'm just being cautious and the flush help sort this out. and thanks for the tranny cooler writeup, i'll be doing the same install this weekend after the tranny flush.

Transmission/Transfer case is different in an FJ60 and FJ62. The thread you linked is right on for an FJ60. They do swap fluid back and forth between the transmission-tcase. FJ62's don't.

If you run in to any issues when you do the job give me a ring: 601.594.7062

About a month ago, i drained my T-case and trannybecause the tranny was slipping going up steep inclines. The fluid in the t-case looked like a strawberry milkshake.

the seal in between was improperly installed when I had it rebuilt (big mistake).
