I checked the gear oil in my '83 FJ60 tonight and found something that has me puzzled. The transfer case was real low on oil and the transmission was at least a quart over full. Is it possible for the t-case to pump oil to the trans? ???

Yep-not only common, but nearly universal. You have 3 choices.

1-Check the t-case once per week

2-Rebuild the t-case (best option)

3-Buy the kit from MAF that routes excess oil back to the t-case.

Option 3 works great and keeps your t-case healthy. Costs $50. If you go option 2-$300. If you forget option 1 and fry your t-case, then get out the check book.

Dont spend $50. just take one of your drain plugs to a hydraulic repair shop and tell them you need two 90 deg. elbows and about a foot of hose. Total is about $20 and no shipping.

Heres a pic of mine.

I just took them one of the drain plugs and let them match it. The small shop here in town couldn't match it so I took it into Dallas and they came back 5 min. later with everything I needed.

I had the opposit. THe oil would drain from the tranny to the t-case.
I removed the plugged breather valve and put a long hose up to the motor where it would stay clean and breath.
It solved the problem.
I don't know if it would help your problem.
Do you get pressure when you remove the fill plug?

I suspect that this is something every cruiser-head should be doing?

I picked up the parts today, here are the numbers.
Wetherhead brand:
MC5515X8X18
10008B-608
Hose

I paid almost $49 for all the parts. I suppose I could have shopped around but I was in a hurry. At least I saved $6 plus shipping over MAF. And I get to share some good tech.

Maybe Woody can add the numbers to the Cruisertech page.

I posted this a while back, and I can not find the thread about it....so here it goes again...

Good luck!

Aeroquip numbers for oil transfer kit.

Hose fittings.

191321-8S
90 degree -8 female JIC elbow hose barb for 1/2" hose

-OR-

4797-8B
Strait -8 female JIC hose barb for 1/2" hose

Use two of 90's.
I included the strait number just in case someone needs it.

Transmission and transfer case fill plug fitting.

15.117-10-8
18mm x 1.5 x -8 male JIC
-OR-
Caterpillar number 6V-4388

(will need to re-use or replace crush gasket with this fitting)

You will need to locate a section of oil/fuel resistant 1/2" inside diameter hose long enough to tie the two fittings together.

SM420's and SM465 owners...

On my SM420, oil transfer was an issue. The 420 and 465 have a fill plug on the passenger side of the transmission, so making a similar hose kit required that I drill a hole in my PTO cover, and weld a -8 Male JIC fitting in the cover, at the correct level, which if you have your transmission full, you can drain it, and the high oil mark will be left apparent with residual oil, or you can measure from the bottom of the case to the fill plug hole, and then measure that distance on the other side and mark it. I was lucky and made the first style work for me.

Either of these fittings will require that you drill a 3/4" hole in the PTO cover on the transmission.

I used the Caterpillar fitting,
8M-0505

or you can use the Aeroquip number
202702-8-8S
