So I ordered an FJ62 gasket kit online, and it arrived yesterday. They came in a Toyota parts box with little interior packaging and I immediately saw that the head gasket and manifold gasket were bent slightly on a couple of the corners and edges. :censor:

So, my question to you folks is how much damage to a gasket is too much and should I send them all back? I've contacted the dealer via e-mail but havent heard any thing back from them yet. (After looking at their web site, it appears that their customer service is poor.)

FYI, this kit was sold as a OEM gasket set, by a Toyota dealer, and was areally good price. Maybe too good?

  • From your description I would not use either one. This is not a job you want to do twice.

  • But there is no way to actually determine this w/o holding them, or at least a picture of them both.

Number 1 issue when getting a HG in the mail: Bent.

I ALWAYS talk to the shipper and won't buy unless it's shipped box-in-a-box and will pay extra to have it shipped that way.

Edges only is *probably* ok, though without seeing it, that's just a guess. Any creases, don't use. Exhaust is more forgiving, but I wouldn't use it, simply because I'd wanna kill if I had to do it again because of that part failure.

I got a bent Toyota HG shipped to me just taped to cardboard. I sent it back & they sent me another no problem. The second time it came in a box.

Maybe this is harsh, but anybody in the mail order auto parts business oughtta know
1. Auto parts
2. The mail
When you get a part that any halfway knowledgeable person would handle like the magna carta, in a bubble mailer, you're being played for a sucker.
was the head gasket sealed in a paper envelope? If not they knowingly may have been trying to pawn off a bad part.
Take your business elsewhere.

Well, the kit came from a Toyota dealership, which I've corresponded with, but have not received a reply from. If the dealership doesn't take care of this, Toyota's regional offices will hear about it. I purchased using PayPal, which I can use to my advantage in returning the item and getting a refund. Maybe I should have been more cautious when ordering this, but it was from a Toyota dealer. It did surprise me that they had it since my local dealer informed me that the OEM gasket kit was not available any longer. I'm going to give them the opportunity to remedy this, and if they don't, I will fully communicate the facts surrounding the issue.

On a positive note, the oil pan gasket included in the kit is the one-peice gasket.

What part number did you get?

3F-E gasket kits have not been available for awhile now. The engine gasket kit: 04111-61072 is a goner and the valve grind/HG kit is a goner as well: 04112-61061

The FJ80 versions of the kits are discontinued as well and have been for quite awhile: 04111-61091 and 04112-61081

You have to piece it together one part at a time-- that's the only way to get all of the parts necessary to overhaul a 3F-E. Unless the dealership had one miraculously sitting on the shelf which would be highly unlikely.

Well, that is not the part number that I got, and the packaging was very poor. I've likely been retaught the lesson of caveat emptor.

The part listed and supposedly delivered is 04111-61057. I pulled the trigger when I saw it advertised for a FJ62. I should have done some homework. I've contacted the seller twice via-email, but haven't heard anything back from them. I'll give them until Friday morning to get back to me by e-mail until I attempt to contact them by phone. If not by then, and unless I hear some positive words here, I'll initiate a return to the seller through paypal.

Thank you for the information in your post.

They sent you a 3F engine gasket kit. That's a carbureted version of the engine you have. There are some parts that work, but many that do not.

That sucks. I hope you get it sorted out.
My family has had Toyotas for a long time, they make great vehicles but the dealerships are a mixed lot it seems.

Clever on their part to advertise it being for an FJ62, but leave out the part about it not being for those FJ62s imported into the USA by Toyota, other than the part number. So, they really did fully disclose what engine it is for. I should have used more descretion in my purchase.

I took it to a mechanic I use and he said that the head gasket might fit, but that he wouldn't use it if it were his vehicle, and since it wasn't in perfect condition, he wouldn't use it on mine either. That tells me enough.

The seller got back to me and asked for photos, which I'll send out tonight. That seems reasonble on their part.

I'm feeling quite foolish right now, though. :bang:

I have contacted the seller, and they offered me the option of either returning for a full refund or sending replacement parts for those that were damaged. So the entire kit is on the way back to them. Hopefully, the shipping won't take too long, and I'll get the refund soon.

I am now the recipient of a full refund, including shipping, on this order. I was surprised to get the shipping refunded, but since the item was damaged when it arrived here, they gave me a full refund.

Lesson learned on my part, at very little cost (time) on my part.
