Hey guys,

Im working on the front end of my fathers 100 and I am looking for some advice from you 100 gurus. Long story short, every time I take something apart it needs to be in showroom condition when reassembled. That said, he had a caliper lock up the other day and I figured it was the perfect time to do the front end work that I have been putting of for a couple years. Without getting to far off topic, I am trying to get parts ordered and I am stumped on one area. *Question* is there a gasket between the outer face of the spindle and the brake shroud? It seems very strange to me because I scraped a bunch of crap off the machined face of the spindle but I am unable to find a replacement gasket from toyota.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated,

There has never been one there on any car I've ever owned. There is no fluid to be held in, so no gasket would be needed.
I would assume the gunk you scraped off was years of dirt and oil.
 
Thanks for the reply, thats what I was thinking but the confusing part is that there is a gasket between the brake shroud and the knuckle dust shield. #3 being the gasket and #4 being the shield. I guess none of that part of the hub is water tight, it just seems to make sense that there would be some sort of barrier between the two metal faces.

That makes sense then that there would be a gasket there. I have not done this to my truck so I cannot speak to it specifically.
I supposed I should've kept my mouth shut.
 
To my understanding that is the gasket between the circular duct shield and the outer side brake dust shield. From the way it looks after disassembling is #1 followed by the brake shroud followed by #3 and #4?
 
The service manual shows the same thing, maybe someone previous put it on the wrong side.
 
No gasket spec'd between the dust shield and the knuckle, only between the dust seal and the dust shield. But you can add it there- it's only a $4 part. Adding it doesn't cause any clearance issues, so it can't hurt but I'm not sure what if any long term benefit there is.
 
I use white grease between the knuckle and the brake shield for 2 reasons. First it helps prevent rust from forming between the parts, and second, it helps seal out water from getting into the ABS sensor cavity. Just make sure you leave the weep hole depression at the bottom on the knuckle clear so it will drain properly.
Also, while you are in there see if you can remove the ABS sensor. They tend to seize in the hole from rust. If you can remove it, lube it with either white grease or silicone grease to allow easy future removal without having to remove the hub to pound it out from the inside. I've found silicone grease to have a surprisingly long lasting protective effect.
 
You guys really are awesome. This is something that I have been trying to figure out for a couple days and I feel like an idiot not asking sooner. I think Im going to run with badlanders suggestions of white grease to prevent rust and reduce water seeping. I will also lube up the abs sensors because I already have them out.

Rather than start a new thread. Would it be ill advised to use FIPG between the dust seal and rotor shroud, rather than using the gasket posted above?

No, do not use glue (FIPG). De-rust and used marine grease.
 
If you meant FIPG instead of fiber gasket, prob not a great idea. Getting the right thickness coated evenly for dust shield clearance as well as considering separating those two components next service could be pita. But if there was no other option- doable taking care to not goop it on allowing seepage to interfere with the ABS sensor.

Those fiber gaskets are cheap ($5.50 43436-60020 )- and combining @2001LC process of de-rust and grease on knuckle surface. Just do it right and there's no worries.

This. Since my post in 2017 I've switched to marine grease. The white grease became pasty and dried up over time. Marine grease should be longer lasting.
 
If you already have two new gaskets. You can use your old ones also. I grease the gaskets. The grease helps keep out water, acting as a sealant. It also inhibits rust.

I don’t have new gaskets yet, the old ones crumbled apart. I’ll get replacement gaskets and marine grease the other side. Thnx.
