...I noticed this the other day as I was cruising up the mountain on a backroads trail up to Sherman Lake. You can see the vapor distorting the light with refraction. There is a lot of vapor:eek:
I'm guessing I noticed this around 10,000ft altitude and it was probably 70 degrees Farenheit.
I haven't notice this around town, but my garage reeks of gas when I get home from driving. The temps in town have been around 100 degrees Farenheit lately.
Anyone have any idea what is going on? This does not at all seem normal to me.
I just bought this truck a week ago and love it. Sooo much different than my 80. I'm not real versed on the 100 series little quirks yet and search didn't help me with this one.

TIA,
Aj

Sounds like the washer in the gas cap needs to be changed.

Really? Just the gas cap? I have no CEL on.
I thought I would get the CEL for a gas cap? Maybe I'm getting an error code, but no CEL?
Can this washer you speak of be purchased separately and less expensively than the whole gas cap?

Thanks!

I'm sure someone else will chime in, but I'm having the same issues at high altitude. (8000-13000ft)

I believe the 80 (and many other vehicles) had the same issue and it's fixed by replacing the charcoal canister. Gonna give that a try.

Start with the gas cap, it's like seven bucks. That fixed the issue with mine, on hot days and big altitude changes.

Where did you get it for only $7? I read someone else on this forum paid $32!

O'Rielly's. Not something that I need an OEM part for.

Nice! There is an O-Reilly's about a 1/2 mile from my house! For $7 I'll give it a try.

Thanks

I had a similar issue today at high altitude. Took my LX over Pearl Pass in Aspen to Crested Butte. At about 11,000' I kept smelling fuel vapor. For a long time. I heard a gurgling near the charcoal canister. By the time I got down to Crested Butte (9,000'), it stopped.

I'll see if it happens again. If so, I'll start with gas cap the canister.

I tried the new gas cap just before leaving for Red Cone Pass the other day. OEM replacement was $21. It DID NOT fix the problem. Vapor and gurgle all day offroad.

I guess my next step is the canister. Which is NOT cheap. I think it's dangerous for me and anyone around my vehicle to have that vapor pouring out. Especially offroad where metal on rock could produce a spark. Unlikey, but still very possible.

Has anyone done the canister and solved the problem?

And the issue only gets worse with 2 tanks . Its too darn bad we can't come up with a solution as affordable and effective as the 80-Series guys have done when it comes time to change the CC.

A new gas cap is a cheap repair. Before replacing the charcoal canister though, remove it first and blow compressed air through all of your lines and every orifice of the canister itself. Give it all a good blowout. Then reassemble and see if your problem continues. Apparently there is ethanol residue that can build up because of the higher concentrations of it in the fuel we're getting and it can clog this stuff up eventually. I did this recently because of the same issues and it fixed it. Otherwise a new canister can be $400-$600 (or take the chance of buying a used one that may not be in much better shape than the one you have).

I've got the same problem. Experienced it again last week on gaining 7,000 feet of elevation. I got a problem because man I love getting high;)

What does this canister cost to replace?

$350 plus depending on what kind of discount you can get. Autozone lists it for $440.

I'm gonna look at mine this week, and see if I can avoid spending any $$.

Spresso...... Have you relocated yours to make room for the Aux Tank?if so, and If you've taken a good look at it, do you know why can't it be cheaply duplicated a la 80 series? Don't they all basically do the same thing? I was hoping a cheaper solution existed.

The CC is located in the engine bay on '98-'02 MYs. I've thought about dissecting mine to see if there was a cheap way to replace the charcoal but so far I cheaped out on the risk given the high price of a new one.
