Keep getting a strong gas smell when driving. I recently replaced the fuel pump and exhaust manifold gasket and neither look to be leaking. It was doing this before the manifold gasket also. Any ideas?

Just read it. My gas cap definitely is not oem!

Gas tank was replaced last year along with a couple other things. Will have to dig out the receipt.

Just fixed my gas odor issue. It was outside the truck, like you could smell it around the vehicle, and it stunk up the garage so bad I moved it outside. It was a combination of things, primarily the pump was weeping fuel, esp when the tank was full, and pressure building up in the tank because of clogged/non-working evap system. I got the evap sys working when I desmogged (kept the associated components and used new vac hose), swapped "tank" and "purge" hoses on top of charcoal canister (fixed tank pressure problems), and last, replaced the fuel pump with OEM pump and new insulator (spacer).

Odor is gone, and I can park in the basement garage now with no detectable odor.

Odor in the cab is likely coming from the evap hoses in right rear of vehicle, behind the trim panel. Bunch of breather hoses back there. Mine were OK, but I did find a huge hole where the PO ran over a fence post and punched thru the wheel well sheet metal. It was full of road debris and mud. So I gotta clean that out and patch the sheet metal.

Just replaced my fuel pump as well.

I know. Just relating my issues. Pull trim panel and check tank breathers. Also gas could be sloshing out the cap and draining down into there. You'll smell it when you pop the panel I'd imagine. Also swap those canister hoses. Check return line from pump to tank. Good luck. Endeavor to persevere. :grinpimp:

I too had gas smell issues. I did much of what's already been mentioned, but in the end it was an exhaust leak from the exhaust manifold J-pipe to exhaust pipe flange. One of the studs was busted off. Try using the seafoam method to generate smoke which will exposes exhaust leaks (search).

Stuff I tried before finding the exhaust leak:
I replaced my manifold gasket. I replaced all my evap fuel hoses too as they stunk when I put my nose behind that rear passenger panel. Canister and hoses. Fuel pump. Fuel hoses and filter under hood.

I was thrown off b/c it really smelled like gas, not exhaust, but I can't argue with results. My point is don't discount the likelihood of an undiscovered exhaust leak.

Seafoam directly to carb?

Yep, but go super slow and manually rev the throttle to keep it alive. When you hear it bog down stop. You probably want a friend to dump so you can get under the rig with a flashlight and look for the leaks. Do a search, I'm no expert but it works. Warning: it produces a LOT of smoke and your neighbors may raise a brow or two.
