Wife needs a new gas range. What is the brand to get professional series?

The prices for 'pro' units run from high to VERY high. a site called Chowhound has lots of details. We ended up with electric wall mounted oven and a Miele Kombi cook top with 2 NG burners and 2 Electric Radiant units. Hardly ever use the glass radiant elements. Would go all gas burners next time for the cook top. Probably stay electric for the oven though. Only problem with gas is they don't simmer too well.

You can't beat Thermador. Star burners are the best in the business. Wish I could convert our circle burner Thermador rangetop to them. Ours is a 36" model-six burners; two excel-low and 4 mains--18,000 BTUs each.
I would dissagree that gas will not simmer. These guys will hold as low as 110 deg F on excel-low burners. And if you really want to dissperse heat evenly, just add a heat diffuser under the pot.
Gas is way easier to control heat-when it's on, it's on now. Go from simmer to boil in a heartbeat. When it's off--it's off--no residual heat in the elements(except the grates,of course).
We've got a Jenn-Aire double wall convection oven-it's ok(electronics failed once early on). Wish we had gotten the Thermador oven in addition to the range-top instead of the Jenn-Aire. The other added benefit is: gas is way cheaper to operate.
Also, if you live in a zone prone to power outages, you have no worries about cooking.

Thanks for the advise. I found out it is going to take a lot of work and money to change from a 30" gas range, to a 36" dual fuel. Holding off for now.

Dual fuel? What's that all about?

Lp gas or natural gas stove, electric oven.

Got it. When you said "range", I was thinking just about the cook top and assumed you already had a separate single or dual oven. You want a new stove (range, whatever) that's an integrated unit. I don't think "professional" and 30" go together for one of those.

I've got a 36" GE monagram dual fuel. You can get them in 30" 4 burners also.
Was a lot to install as the house was all electric and now has propane also. Luckily i have a full basement.

Have an older Thermador double convection wall oven and just picked up a new Kenmore Pro double convection as it has proof mode. For the holiday will have 36" range, electric cooktop and both double wall ovens going. No more cold food. LOL

Wife and I are looking to build or buy a new house in the near future. No sense buying a new range now.

I recently sold my old house and when we remodeled we put in a Dacor 48" range. propane/electric. Man I miss that thing.

I looked long and hard at the dual fuel units as well and think they offer the best of both worlds. I wanted one for the new cottage where I had originally planned to heat with propane (hot water/hydronic) but ended up with an electric boiler (intended as backup) until I get a tank installed. I'll keep looking for a deal I guess on dual fuel range.

If you want something along the line of Wolf or Thermador, Dacor etc - in addition to the Miele option that we are using; another product is called AGA .. they have a dual fuel unit that looks pretty good http://www.aga-ranges.com/products/aga-ranges/aga-legacy-44-dual-fuel-range.aspx

For something really esoteric - my English cousin living in York (city of - UK) has the AGA "4 Oven Cooker" (http://www.aga-ranges.com/products/traditional-aga-cookers/4-oven-(gas).aspx) ... her eyes glaze over when she speaks about it and claims she hugs it when she gets home ---- although these things apparently run all day holding heat in the brick --- so its probably the only warm thing in the entire house given the weather in UK.

Anyway these units are installed (built) custom for you and not the sort of thing that you sell or move. For something that you will need a journeyman ticket and membership in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen to operate and if you plan to stay in the house .. these are pretty good. Also I dont think they are giving these puppies away.
