My bj60 with normal driving is about 10-12l/100km, or 20-24mpg. Depends how much is off rd/city/hwy. That's with 4.1 gears and 235/85/16.

Dang I need a bj!!:D I'm getting about 13 mpg in my 60 no matter what. That extra 10 mpg would be incredible!!

i am getting about 9-10 mpg CITY and about 12-13 mpg HWY now...just added some air to tires and once I go through full emission system hope to improve slightly.

lift = lower mileage.

You want it to get the best mileage?

keep the small tires and drive 55..

low and slow is the key.

When I have numbers on my rig. (35's 3.70's and super short) I'll post them

35's, 4.11's 5.0/aod/203/splittcase = about 2100 rpm at 70 mph = 18 mpg.
City start and stop, between 11 and 14 depending on how much fun I have.

88 fj62, in need of a tune-up, stock tires 12-13mpg city(below 30mph for me). 15-16mpg for highway(70-85mph)
quite happy with it.

so what i am gathering from all this stock gears and 31's will be about 11- 15mpg but when you regear you can get up to 18? or get a BJ60.. for better mileage?

well when I bought the FJ60 in May 2008 I was getting abt 10, with improvements since November 2009 I am now averaging 13

Records since nov can be viewed at

this provides me a good running record of what I MODs have done and what the improvements in mileage are

195k
compression: 135-147
3.73 diff
31x10.50s
TrollHole carb
tuned/timed

Install JimC's Dizzy mod today, along with fixing thermostat which was missing the top O ring - and was COLD!!!!

Filled tank completely on 16 feb and test mileage w/o idling got 15.1, small improvements with each MOD

My 62 was averaging around 10 MPG City, 14 Highway since the Winter. I Seafoamed and am now getting 15.8 Highway on my last trip, and thats over the Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia.

Mine is fully desmogged with 32" tires. I got 13MPG out of the last tank which included two short offroading trips totaling 30-35 miles in 4H and 4L. I'm only running a single barrel in the carb right now (not by choice) so we'll see what happens when my secondary diaphragm or weber 38 arrives in the mail (whichever comes first is going on).

'83 fj60

my 60 with full desmog, fresh tune, rebuilt carb and dizzy, 4" lift and 33's gets 10-11 on mixed country rd/city/hwy driving....i haven't had it on a long hwy only trip yet

future plans include a H55, headers, electric fan, and full syth gear oils in the near future

When the '62 was new to me (174k, spent life at 3-4k feet), it would get 17-19mpg when I'd run it in high desert country. Slowly over time at low elevation it dropped from 16 down to 14 (was at 16 after lifting and 33x10.5s). I don't doubt with some injection service (pulled at 220k) it could get back to its optimum. It was a bit of a freak engine. 4.56s would have helped, but would have put the A440's 3rd gear out of range for shifting down for hills.

The HZ(-t) will do about 19mpg no matter what I do. I can drive a tank around town or cruise freeways at 70, or at 60, and it will get 19. I can putter down long dirt or gravel roads and it will still get 19. I bet if I did some detuning or turned the boost way down it could do better, but have found I rather like climbing a hill effortlessly with a feeling of plenty of power to spare. Or being able to pass another car easily on a hill. Kind of a new sensation after running mostly stock engines (1F, 2F, 3FE, 3B). All the while carrying around 6500lbs.

BTW, I did my swap mostly for the power gains and range. Not mpg, but range I get out in the boonies. Haven't installed the 40gal tank but that should get me to ~750 miles with some reserve, enough to bop around dirt roads without having to escape to pavement and a station.

I just got my 62 a few days back. I checked the milage and got 16.3 mpg. This was a 150 mile trip down I-5 @ 65~70. I used a GPS for the miles and top off the tank at 9.2 gallons. I'd hoped for 18!

Rig has 31's that puts my speedo off by 4~5 mph at 65. RPM's around 2200.

My BJ with 33's and 4.88's just gave me almost 23mpg on the last tank. Whats even better is offroad, hardcore wheeeling got me 3mpg in my 62, the Non turbo 3B in my BJ gets more than 10mpg crawling around all day.

Esh You don't have to turn down the boost for mpg, you turn down the fuel. A turbo will increase the mpg on a diesel if the fuel is not turned up. Don't know if you can do that with the diesel thats in your 62.

My 1983 FJ 60 gets around 10mpg offroad and 14 around town. Never take it on long drives/freeway and it always has like 500lbs of tools in it + my fat butt

84 FJ60 stock

Just checked after driving around town (A/C always on - its 100+ most days) and a trip up and down the local mountain (highway, sorta) from 2500 feet to 8000 feet and back, r/t on that of 50 miles. I got 12.5 mpg using stock tires, carb, etc.
