Problem: The gas gauge reads empty after driving for a couple of miles. When I fill it up it reads full and then as the day goes on it drops to nothing. I went back there and took apart the sender and other than some serious rusty bolts the unit was intact. However, the coil of wires in the sender had about 5 broken wires 1/4 of the way down (makes sense, there is power for the first bit so it will read full, and then once the float drops below the broken wires no more power).
Fixes: I tried doing some solder work, but I do not have the skill to stitch those tiny wires back together in such a way where the wiper will run over it smoothly.
Has anyone soldered these successfully? Can you take out the spool and wrap a new wire around it?
Any advice is appreciated.
The replacement pieces are more than I want to spend 60$ (on eBay which not sure how I feel about the quality), and 200$ or so for an original.
