Is anyone using a Streetpilot and running the Topo software/maps? I purchased the program but the one time I was going to upload it I got a message saying it would overwrite the normal street maps. Is there a means to upload topo of a section of the country and still keep the street mapping?

Kris,

Alvaro - please respond to this.

I know he's got a streetpilot and has used the topo maps.

Hopefully he'll see this and respond, because I'd like to know as well!

PM or e-mail him...

I have a Streetpilot III and use Garmin's topo maps. What I did was buy a second memory card off eBay and load all my topo maps onto it. You can buy the memory cards pretty cheap.

The streetpilots do not utilize memory cards. They're supposed to have about 650mb extra memory available for stuff like this IIRC.

The Streetpilot IIIs come with a 128 meg Datacard.

Possibly the newer versions of the Streetpilot don't have a removable datacard.

Ditto what Brent mentioned, there is no external memory slot on the newer Streetpilots. Oh, I should have mentioned that it is a Streetpilot 2720

No info on the Garmin website about addition memory.

I have chatted with Alvaro on another issue re: the Streetpilots. I'll have to shoot him a PM.

I have a StreetPilot and it takes CF memory. You can do 1 of two options:

1) Use separate memory cards for City vs. TOPO

or

2) Put both on the same card assuming you have enough room. If you want to view the TOPO, you must turn off the City Navigator Maps in the menu on the GPS unit. I use this feature all the time and I have a Street Pilot 2610.

2720 doesn't have a memory slot. I'll have to play with it over the weekend and see what I can work out.

I have a 2730 and would like to use topos. If I can not load them into the streetpilot a second option would be to stream the gps to a laptop with the topos loaded.

Can the newer streetpilots interface with a laptop on the fly?

If you can get NMEA data out, you should be good. If it's newer, it should have NMEA data out.... geez my PHONE has NMEA data out.
