Bought a Garmin 276C a while ago and was unhappy to find it has the same maps as my OLD GPSIII. Want to update and not sure what's best to do. I know there's updates I can buy but which one is best. Also, is there any good free downloads to update the 276C?
Thanks for any hel

depending, Garmin may give you the updates for free, I know I had to get an update on mine, cost nothing

GPS updates

the best would be to go to www.garmin.com and see what maps is available for you and then proceed to the udates and downloads page. Download the webupdater application, install. plug your gps in your pc and run webupdater. All very easy.

Ray,

What kind of maps are you looking for?

The OS software updates are always free from the Garmin site. I've had a 5-6 come out since I bought my 276 a few years ago and they've worked well to fix the little glitches.

Just to clarify - you're talking about the add on software and not the basic mapping software that comes with it, correct?

I use Garmin's map source software that was purchased seperately from the unit. It works well but you have to pay if you want updates. This software will provide you will detailed STREET maps. It will not show you offroad elevation iso's etc. To get that you have to by another software package.

My experience has been that Garmin is very helpful if you call their tech support line. I would suggest calling them.
