My 97’ didn’t start this morning, jump started it and everything was normal when I drove it for a few minutes. Had to jump it again after killing the engine and then idle was extremely low to the point of almost stalling. I noticed the negative ground was loose so I fixed that, now it starts right up but drops to 475 RPM at idle from its normal 650. I did some research and might try to adjust the throttle cable tomorrow. Any other ideas as to what the issue could be are greatly appreciated!

Throttle cable doesn't set idle, the ECU does with the IAC.

Have you had the intake hose off or disturbed recently?

A sticky throttle cable can create low idle situations.

The idle is controlled by the computer through the idle air control valve. This valve adjusts the amount of air that by- passes the throttle plate to maintain the idles RPM.

With a sticky cable the throttle plate won’t always close completely which allows air to pass through raising the idle RPM.

The IAC then compensates for that extra air by closing its valve which drops the idle RPM

If driving in this state and coming to a stop if the throttle plate should close completely the engine’s idle will drop and depending on how sticky the cable is the engine could stall.

Another indicator of a sticky cable would be when you are slowing down to make a turn and there is a delay in the transmission down shifting to a lower gear.

If the sheathing on the cable is in bad shape and falling apart I would change it out.

Thank you guys for the help! I ran it yesterday and all seemed back to normal. Saw a few mention in older threads that it takes a few start ups for things to get baseline, I assume that’s what happened in my case.
