Hey Everyone,

This is going to eventually be my build thread but for the time being it will just be a run-down of everything that's broken as I come across it. Also, I thought instead of starting a new thread every time I have a question I'll just put them here. So far here's what I know is broken:

- [STRIKE]Need front axle rebuild[/STRIKE]
- [STRIKE]Front tie rod appears to be bent[/STRIKE]
- [STRIKE]Lockers don't engage[/STRIKE]
- [STRIKE]Starter is still suspect but no problem found[/STRIKE] <-- Appears to be caused by old battery
- [STRIKE]Need rear axle rebuild[/STRIKE]

Big thanks to Darin at Canuck's Cruisers for the excellent work he's done! This is my DD and my backup kid hauler and it gives me peace of mind knowing that it's been worked on by the best.:beer:

Here's a pic of my tie rod taken from the passenger side. The FSM shows it as a straight piece so I'm thinking this is wrong. Talking to some of the guys at the last HAMOM it may explain why the truck is easy to oversteer and why it feels unstable in a curve at just about any speed.

Over the weekend I put 1 tube of moly grease in each steering knuckle. From reading Al's recent thread that sounds like a drop in the bucket. That said, the clicking coming from my birfs seems to have been reduced A LOT! Other threads I've read say that putting grease in the knuckles won't have an affect on birf clicking but I definitely notice a difference.

One question I have... the square steering knuckle fill screws (FSM doesn't seem to have a name for these) were only threaded in about half way. The remaining threads are filled with hardened schmutz. Do these just need to be cleaned and then threaded in completely or are they supposed to be like that?

When you say a set do you mean the tie rod and relay rod? Is there a reason to replace both at once?

Well no.... but if you are going to get upgraded (stronger) ones you might as well do them at the both time if $$$ permits.... if not do it in piecemeal

W00t! My first planned upgrade will be a Yaesu FT-8900 quad-band transceiver. It's a pretty slick radio that will do 70cm, 2m, 6m, & 10m plus has a few interesting additional features. I was planning to install it when I get enough scratch to upgrade my stereo system too but not sure I can wait that long now that I have to buy a new tie-rod...

Nice, eventualy I'll take my test and join the ranks. I've been looking at the portable units, just in case I take a different truck, but they're pricey...

It's good in an emergency. But like LCs, another potentially pricey hobby. I was fortunate to get a hand-me-down from my brother since he stays on the bleeding edge of tech and always has spare gadgets lying around. Right now all my extra dough is going into this :censor: truck...

New tie rod needed...... call up bud for a new set

Holy crap! I took you up on your advise Al and called Bud Built yesterday around 3pm to order a replacement tie rod. It was here by 2pm today. That's faster than Wile E. Coyote gets Acme products!

So, I've got most of the parts to do my front end service. Now I'll have to put together all the miscellany to do the tie rod too...

Very pimp radio! I've been eyeballing that one myself. You'll have to tell us how well you like it :D

Okay, I've been really confused about what wheel bearings I need. It should be simple since countless posts deal with this subject but I think I figured something out... Koyo makes outer bearings but not inner. Right?

So far I've got 2x outer wheel bearings (PN W0133-1740404) which appears to include races. I've been looking for (and not finding) Koyo inner wheel bearings and races but it looks like I need to go with the Timken inners (PN 90368-49084-77).

as far as I know they should make both wheel bearings.... I think my first set was koyos. Timken is just as good if not better so don't hesitate with those... they are also locally made.... Lincolnton NC..... well one of the 100 or so plants but still a quality product.

I keep meaning to stop by the plant and see if the club could buy direct in bulk from them so everyone can get some for their next rebuild at a low price.

As Al said, I wouldnt let the brand deter you. Just get the right application and youll be good.

Pick up the phone and call darin(canucks cruisers) or Kurt (cruiser outfitters) and they should be able to get you exactly what you need.

And FYI toyota used both timken and koyo..... whoever gave mr. T a better contract price that year.
Timken are made in USA as mentioned and usually ten bucks cheaper or so.

Cool, thanks guys. I'll stop fretting over it and just order up some Timkens.

Fuggit... I'm punting and taking the 80 down to see krzyabncanuck in Fayetteville. Last week my wife's Odyssey was out of commission and I just need to get this truck into a state of reliability. All my dreams of DIY glory faded with summer...

Now I'm stoked that sometime very soon I'll have a real understanding of exactly how un/healthy this thing is and what really needs to be done.

Darin will set it up and be straight with you on what's up...

Thanks Jerry. Lifes too short to do wrong by people. I run this place that if you need it i will tell you, but if its a waste of money i will tell you that also and let you decide from there.

Yup... Darin, you do come highly recommended. I suspect that we might have to take a good look at the starter too. After just one search it seems like this is something to expect on a high mileage TLC. So now I'm excited to get everything taken care of but dreading the final tally.

I used to have a spare starter here but i let someone borrow it months ago and alas i never got it back along with other things.
