This will not be news to many, but may help some newcomers.

My '82 fj60 was running sluggishly. I could only reach 50-55 uphill with the pedal to the floor and was at a top speed of 65 on a level road. I knew there was something wrong and had plans to rebuild the carb. A friend with a '84 fj60 had a similiar problem and it turned out to be the torque rod which opens the throttle was installed backwards. We checked mine and sure enough, someone had comitted the same error. We switched it and test drove. Result: a new truck. I now have no trouble hitting 70-75 on an incline with the petal in 1/4 or so. She's powerful and responsive. I was blown away by the difference. If your'e having these symptoms its worth checking this.

Do you think that you could post a pic or two of the incorrect and correct setups? I think that I have done the same thing. Much apreciated!

If you look closely at the throttle torq rod (runs from firewall to carb bracket), you can see that the two arms are different lengths. The shorter arm is actuated by the pedal, the longer arm pushes on the carb. Have a look at it and you'll see what I mean.

Short arm to the back, longer arm toward the front.

my 62 only goes about 55 up inclines, could i have similar problem?

very old thread I know. Just wanted to say thanks. I have had power issues I have not been able to figure out. After reading this I went and looked at the torque rod and it was backwards. I fixed it and it was like the engine fairy came and waved her wand over my 60. I had it at the smog shop a while back and I guess they reversed it. 🙄
Anyhow, if you’re still around, thanks!
