I'm about to drop some change on a cage for my FJ40 from Metaltech. I'd like to get a full cage but could save some money on the Jackson cage kit. Would either cage add more value than the other to the 40, or is it strictly preference?

I'm asking because I'm still not too sure on the keep vs sell when I'm done building it. Also, I'm considering ordering it fully assembled due to the lack of skilled welders with roll cage knowledge in my area, or at least people I'd trust with my life.

I don't think adding a cage to a Cruiser necessarily equates to added value since it depends on your target buyer and who knows who that may be. If you think you will add more value than the cage is worth, you will be disappointed.

x2 - I think adding a hoop behind the driver helps sell the vehicle, any more extreme cage would probably have the opposite effect. No one wants a beat-down 4x4. Or, think of it this way - how many people have you heard brag about their new vehicle having no scratches on the skid plates? I've yet to hear anyone say "yeah, I bought this cool new rig because it had a huge dent on the frame, skid plates and on the rear diff".... putting a full cage brings with it a perception that you beat it (as well you should).

the only way to make money building extreme 4x4s is if you build them for a customer (and even then, it's not an easy way to make money).

full cage would have better resale for anyone with kids...

Every friend I've had who has had an open-topped 4x4 sold their open-topped 4x4 by the day their child turned 1. They got the next open top 4x4 when they were looking for a good rig for their kid's 1st car. I'm old enough, that I can also add this, those kids sold their open topped 4x4 by the time their kids turned 1.

With that said, if you want to sell to the replacement/1st car market... good running, safe, and cheap (generally the last two are the most important) is your market.

Interesting. I sold my closed top 4x4 for an open top when my daughter was 3... My Dad always had a soft top CJ5 when I was growing up. That being said, I finally have my 40 and I need to go through the process of modifying my Jackson cage to a family cage.

I know what the "most important" things are for resale, but that isn't what this thread is about, is it? I was simply making the point that I disagreed with the fact that a wild cage would make it less desirable. We are not talking about your wife's JK, we are probably talking about the OP's "1975 FJ40 GM powered, ARB/Detroit, 4.88, SOA, 37" IROKs, Aqualu tub" (according to his signature).

I would be more worried with how you the owner is gonna use the rig now. Cause at selling time, you can always find a stock cage to throw in "sweetend deal". With that being said, if you are going full on make sure you plan on how you want to mount your existing seats. I kicked myself a few times for not having foresight in this. Ultimately, we went to having our seats mounted to cage.

you would rather have the bench seats?
