I've been planning on digging into my rear hubs for a year and a half now.

I noticed that one side leaks at the axle flange when it is parked on a side slope, so I figured it needed seals at the very least.

I got to it last summer and got stopped at the break drum. The little bolt holes that force the drum off the hub were stripped and no matter how much prying I did the drum wouldn't budge.

So today I dug back into it. I was fully prepared to weld nuts onto the drum so I could use the bolts to force the drum off.

With a little PB blaster the drum actually came off with minimal prying and beating.

After I took the axle out, the real challange presented itself. I had a gooey mess of diff fluid and gease to deal with.

I cleaned out some of the gr-oil and took of the lock nuts and washer. Another ring, it was like a wire, also came out. It was a piece that was not shown in my FSM.

I cleaned out some more gr-oil and found ... rollers from the outer bearing.

Ugh, what has happened?

The truck has not given any indication that a bearing was going.

I took the hub off and cleaned the rest of the gr-oil off and out of it.

It appears that the bearing cage came apart. I found it in the space between the inner and outer bearing.

I punched out the outer races and they both looked good. So I think I dodged a bullet here.

I cleaned off the spindle and although it is a bit pitted, the important surfaces seem OK.

I'll re-assemble it tomorrow and put on some new shoes as well. It looks like I caught those just in time as well.

good timing, from the looks of the color, it didn't look to good.

never taking apart a Toyota full float, does the gear oil lube the bearings? or do you pack them with grease?

everything on the outside of the spindle is greased, everything from the very inside edge of the spindle gets oil.

if you look back at his first set of pictures you can see the 2 small oil/axle seals on the very inside of the package

I'm assuming he removed them from the spindle end before he took the picture?

from the looks of your backing/dust shield, your inner hub seal needed replacing some time ago.

its easy to assume that fluids were not only departing the hub, but fluids that should not have been inside got in:meh:

Dodged one there Kevin; that mud/grease/water mess in there is very destructive.

If that spindle was tore up it would mean a new axle housing for you.

Missed ya in Red Wing. How was the EU?

Hi Steve, we had a great time in Europe. I only saw two or three cruisers, but I lost count of the ferraris, lambos and masseraties though.

Turns out the Red Wing weekend was on my wifes birthday (my bad), so it was a good thing I didn't try and fit it in. Did Rob make it?

The small seal goes into the outer lock nut. You can see it in the the pic with the channel lock pliers on the nut. The axle goes it, keeping the diff oil from getting into the hub.

If you look at the bottom brake shoe there is a dark mass, about a heaping tablespoon of grease, that presumably came out the larger inner seal.

I currently have the brake adjusters soaking in PB blaster, hoping to unseize them.

Does anyone know if the brake cylinders are available anywhere? They are not the same as on the 40's.

must be completely different from a 70 series.............., all of my 70 series FF assemblies house the seal inside the end of the spindle, not the nut. maybe that was your problem?

the color of the fluid inside of your hub would indicate something other than petroleum based:meh:

what is the year of your axle/rig, I'll dig you up a part number and possibly be able to tell you whether it's still available:beer:
