Fuel-water filter draining?

Hey all,
Still learning every day about my '96 prado with 1KZ-TE. Towards the back of the manual it briefly describes the process for draining the fuel water filter filter and says to do so after getting a warning light or buzzer on the dash. Has anyone done this pre-emptively, or just wait for the alarm to go off? Is water build up in the fuel system something that happens often?

I have never had an issue with watery diesel so I have never drained it.

I've drained about 1/4 of a cup out a couple of times in the past but don't feel like it was needed to be honest. Theirs no harm in doing this though to be sure. It takes almost zero effort.
