fuel tank theory?

You need to slow down and fix one problem at a time. You've gone from fuel to spark to battery to starter in one thread. Take a deep breath. Pick up a Gregory's manual and a FSM and tackle the fuel delivery problem. There aren't a lot of part between the tank and the carb, so you should be able to narrow it down. Once you have fuel move onto the spark issue and so forth.

Stop hitting your starter with a hammer. Remember, this is supposed to be fun!

Make sure your ignition switch isn't shot. Know how to use a jumper to energize the starter solenoid? I'd do that before shucking out dinero for a new starter.

For your fuel delivery issue, try removing the fuel line on the inlet side of the fuel pump, & with the engine cranking over you should be able to hold your finger over the tube on the fuel pump, & feel if it is creating a vacuum. If so, purchase a piece of fuel line, long enough to go from the fuel pump to the tank, hook it to the inlet side of the fuel pump, & run the other end into a gas can, if it pumps fuel to the carburetor this way, hook the fuel line directly to the tank, if no fuel is pumped out of the tank, it could be the internal pickup tube in the tank.

I understand what you're saying, but it seems like more problems get uncovered when I think I've finally fixed one. I will take your advice though and for now the big problem is the starter not turning over any more. I'll be searching past threads to find all the info I can on it. Thanks for your help everyone.
