Hello MUDDERS, I need to remove my fuel tank on my 67 FJ40 and I have never done it before and was wondering if there is an easy button method. Do I drain it at the filter before I disconnect the line from the tank (I'm sure there is a joke in here some place). Or do I syphon from the filler tube. For those who have pulled their tank, is there anything you wish you had done prior to reinstall?
Thanks in advance...Steve

When I was rebuilding the floor, I was pulling the tank every weekend... I'd just run it almost empty, slip off the fuel supply line, and slip on a short scrap of plugged hose over the line. Id then plug off the return line, other vent lines, and disconect the filler tube from the body.

Does the 67 tank have a drain plug? That'd probably be the easiest. When I swapped my poly tank (no drain plug on those) a few weeks ago I just ran it completely dry, then removed it. There was probably less than a couple cups of gas left, which I dumped into another tank. On my jeep I disconnected it at the fuel pump inlet and connected a short length of hose and just let it siphon out on its own. It was slow but that was the easiest way for me.

usually the course of action taken when dealing with tanks is running the tank near empty beforehand. Only takes a little planning and eliminates the need to drain the tank, which is as big of hassle as removing the tank.:ban:

When I pulled mine to do herculiner it was really easy. Couple bolts, straps, and a hose or two and lift on out.

I have more than a dozen cruisers. Only one I have never dealt with draining the gas tank is my 100 series. Even thing from a FJ25 to a FJ62 has a drain plug. In most case a five gallon jerry can with a funnel with under it. if your tank is low, under five gallon the five gallon pail is the easest way. I drain vehicle I know will be sitting a while. Like all my project. Easier to take it out fresh as compared to dealing with cleaning out the tank later and figuring out the cerrect way of dealing with old gas.
