Hey guys, I am just finishing up my 12HT swap into my FJ60.
The time has come to fire it up, and I need to prime my fuel system. The problem is, my manual fuel pump wont suck. I filled the fuel line from the tank, to the first filter by hand. Then I filled the filter, and the line from the filter to the manual pump, also by hand. Once it was all clamped and sealed, I started pumping with the manual priming pump. After 20 straight minutes, I noticed no difference in the pump, and no new fuel was flowing through the filter.

I removed the line from the primary filter (so it was only connected to the priming pump at one end). I then held it up and filled it with diesel. When I pumped the priming pump, the fuel level in the hose did not go down at all. As a result, I have reason to believe that the pump is broken.

How else can I prime my system?? If I put enough fuel in the lines before the priming pump will the engine automatically suck it up??? How "primed" does it need to be?

what should I do?

Thanks!

Yeah you don't really want to start/run the engine until at least the final filter is full.
It may be a s*** hard slog but you can connect a tube to the nipple at the final fuel filter open up the bleeder and suck the fuel through with your mouth. Otherwise you can use a vacuum bleeder if you can you're hands on one but ultimately you need a new pump and the good news is there easily available and cheap enough.
I've got a Bosch one which I'm pretty sure everyone else has the same and someone will point you in the right direction, I'm sure every truck parts supplier stocks them because they're a standard thread and problem.

replace the priming pump?

i had the same problem when I replaced the fuel filter, the mechanic had to use some fancy pump and sucked the fuel through, i cant remember why he said it, but he said definitely don't try and start it without the fuel all the way thru.

i now also have a bosch primer pump

Ok. Great help guys. Thanks.
What's a new priming pump cost??

On my Mercedes, I crack open the injector lines, have a helper crank the engine a few turns, then tighten injector lines them as they prime.

If you dont have a new primer handy ,you could put some diesel in a container and elevate it above the pump and the engine will suck it through.
Once the engine is running there will be enough fuel in the pump to rejoin the fuel lines.

Brilliant. Thats just what I was looking for. Thanks so much. Ill give it a shot and report back.

Keep in mind the 2h and 12ht motors HATE pumping air. I had to rebuild a pump on a 2h after my mate ran it out of fuel and kept trying to start it not realising it was out of fuel, the diaphragm was shot. It was pretty much due for a rebuild any way the air just hammered in the final nail.
