First of all, yes I'm new to the forum. I've had my 79 FJ for a year now. Recently some gas smells started; some issues starting with choke sticking. Won't start w/too much gas in carb; try to start next morning no gas in carb. Upon inspection is has both a manuel and electric pump. Remove & changed the fuel filters and lines. Remove the manuel pump; arm broken off. Removed arm and spring and replaced; still nothing. Replaced electric pump; stll nothing. Removed new manuel pump; armed sheared again. Removed manuel fuel pump and sealed with stainless steel cover; hooked 3lb pressure electric fuel pump directly and it started and runs great. Runs better than ever; no gas smell or carb leaks.

My worry is what caused the manuel pump arm to shear and then again and if there are some further issues to deal with. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure that manual pump was installed correctly? Did you have the spacer?

Would the pump on the vehicle worked for at least 1.5 years without the spacer?

I very much doubt it. Is it possible that the spacer is still attached to the first manual pump (with the broken arm)?
