So I got a new pump and it says I need the insulator. The current one is leaking at the diaphragm housing. There is no insulator. Prolly the reason it's leaking. Anyway would napa or like have one? Or do I need to order it? Where's the best place to look? Thanks and aloha

Insulator and gaskets can be ordered from any Toyota dealer, or from @beno cheap.
This illustration is for a FJ60.
(BTW, the fuel pump won't work properly, if at all, without the insulator. The insulator is a spacer that positions the fuel pump arm the correct distance from the cam. Usually the insulator is stuck to the block when the fuel pump comes off).

Yeah I just found it. Next time I'll double check before wasting your guys time. Sorry about that and thanks for the reply

the spacer/insulator looks like a thick version of the gasket...

Now I am worried. (start thread hijack)

I recently reinstalled the mechanical fuel pump as part of my engine rebuild on a 9/84 build date 60. There was no insulator wired to the pump as there would (should?) have been if it was there originally when I removed it.

ToyDIY calls an insulator out, but in checking SOR's info, they say "7/79-10/84- only some have insulators"

The fuel pump is Kyosan Denki Made in Japan- only numbers stamped on top are 9H173.

Aside from the obvious possibility that I lost the insulator, what do you guys think?

All of the FJ60's use the fuel pump insulator/spacer. SOR's info is kind of vague, as it is the '79 thru '80 FJ40's that do not.
New fuel pumps don't come with a new insulator, as it is not a wear item. As mentioned above, they are usually stuck on to the block when the fuel pump is removed. They are black plastic and look like the block when grimy. Clean off the area around the mounting flange of the mounted fuel pump. You will be able to see if an insulator/spacer is installed.

as noted its probally been on the block all the time....

Without the insulator your outlet fuel pump will last about 3 seconds at the most before the pump arm is sheared off and dropped into the oil pan. This only applies to FJ 60's though some of the older engines had 2 port fuel pumps that didn't need a spacer. All Fj60's need the spacer AFAIK

Thanks, guys. It sounds like the insulator is MIA. It is probable that it was stuck to the block and I missed it before it went to the shop to get it's beauty treatment- grimy would be a kind description of the block's condition when it was sent away. It was only a year ago, so who would think I can't remember.

I wasn't that concerned when I tore it apart as it was to become a 2FE, and I was planning to use the 3FE block off plate in lieu of the pump, anyway. Due to auxiliary tank plumbing issues, the stock pump is now going back in to feed a surge tank to feed the EFI pump. Hence my uniformed moment of panic .

Talk about a timely thread:beer:
