Filled up to go to Uwharrie this weekend. Drove down, wheeled all day, and drove back. I still have above a full tank! So unless the cruiser just all of a sudden decided not to run on gas, i think my fuel guage is not working. I did a search but didn't come up with anything. I'll check the FSM tonight. In the mean time, any suggestions on the culprit?

I generally hear about fuel senders going bad much more than the guage...

Nothing specific about 80s though, sorry.

bump.

When my fuel level sending unit in my 87 FJ60 went bad the gauge pegged out below E, not at F.... Pegging at F generally means dirty contacts on the back of the gauge (in 60 series anyway).

Thanks doc. That's a start. I wonder if this assembly is accessable through the floor of the 80 under the rear seats. Pull the carpet up and there is an oval hatch that is bolted down.

I'm thinking maybe contacts too. Just not sure where they are..........

The 'contacts' I was refering to are on the back of the GAUGE, not in the tank. You pull the connector for the gauge and use some emory (sp?) cloth on them .... again- on a 60 anyway.

Until you find the culprit, keep one eye on the trip meter!

Thanks Doc. Sorry, i was just trying to get a little attention and some suggestions from others. Driving around with a full tank of gas is really getting me down. Or my wallet at least. I figured either B or Cdan would have a good suggestion.

CJ,

It's all in your head. Your wallet is no lighter other than the slight fuel used for frequent stops. :D

I don't have any experience with problems with the fuel gauge. The sender is in the tank which is accessible through a panel under the 2nd row seats. Let me know if you need something from the '97 FSM. Other than this, I can't help on this one. Sorry.

Never have to do this on the cruiser but if the fuel sender is consisted of a float and resistor coil, then check if the float is stuck up (highest fuel reading) somehow. Clean it throughly, especially on the coil contact with a used toothbrush and brake or carb. cleaner (to rinse off). Please be ESD safe if you're removing the sender.

Frank.

What he means is, douse the stogie before cracking that trap door open.

cruiser go boom

Thanks guys. I'll start by accessing the sender unit, while not smoking!
