From under the truck. Its a pain.
Pull the tire off, move the tranny dipstick out of the way, and reach up in there and spend some time feeling around. Once you get the feel of how it is positioned, and once you have done one or two, you can pretty much swap them out in 15-20 minutes--with some scratched up forearms.....
How tough would it be to move everything out from under the intake during say...................a HG job where the upper intake is removed?

Well, the fuel filter is *really* easy to get at once you have removed the upper intake plenum...I removed both. All of my stuff around the block was removed for my rebuild. Everything but the block and brake booster.
Onur, when bugsnbikes mentioned you moved you wiring harness, did you move it just for the HG or did you re-route it permanently for some reason?
If i recall- he hacksawed the lower intake(which wasnt removed for the HG job) joint--slipped out the harness- and welded it back together.
Permanently--mainly for ease of access and to be able to clean the lower intake plenum fully.
The way Toyota did it is that they ran it through the intake manifold and through IIRC the second to last runner which made accessing it almost impossible. You can see after and before pics below.
Which harness is down there? I've never had the intake plenum off so I'm still discovering the 1FZ marvels. Is the harness is a vulnerable position like the loom near the EGR valve?

Hacksawed indeed and threw the lower plenum away.
The runner split apart too much and lost structural integrity. My friend Kirk here on MUD had an extra that he gave towards the project. So, I sent that one for some hot tanking and then reinstalled with the fuel injector lines running above and through the intake plenums (upper-lower) and then ran the other stuff underneath the whole intake plenum assy.
wait- so if this is cut-ala hacksaw method- the intake pulls itself apart further and cant be rewelded?? Or you just had this spare handy and swapped it out for an uncut version.

Man, i just replaced the valve cover gasket; so I was about 1/2 way there with removing stuff to get to the ff. Guess I will try beno's way with removing the tyre and then reach/feel.
My trans fluid is draining as we speak. Thought I could do the ff while I wait
Btw, I was gonna refill with Mobil 1 aft. Any negatives to that?
