I need to paint the top of my BJ 74. It is a silver color. Short of going to a computer color match , does anyone know the paint code for the FRP top! And the color of the LANDCRUISER lettering. It is not the body color

I need to know this too!

me too:hhmm:

bump. Anybody?

I tested a high-end automotive wheel paint - metallic silver - on my faded, flaky FRP. It looks pretty damn fine though there's an edge on each run of the can but it looks s***-tins better than it currently does.

You'll have to spray the top whilst the windows are out eh?

Im gonna respray the frp as well as the bj73 itself to.

I guess the fiberglass reinforced plastic need a special paint to hold up nicely and not the same paint as the body ?

I went to the paint store, and they had a paint code for the FRP top for a 1986, but not 1985

I got PPG OMNI MTH33772 Metallic 2K Urethane I dabbed some on the top. Looks a little darker, but after 28 years the top probably faded.

On the white roof,it is not painted a different colour, but on the silver roof it is just black I thought.

I like the FRP tops when they are painted the same colour as the body;)

My FRP top has the LANDCRUISER letters painted an almost ocean blue

Back in the day when I had a 1974 VW Westfalia I repainted the fiberglass top with a marine/boat type fiberglass paint. I used a spray gun and it looked brand new when I was done. I sold it five years later and the new owner asked me if the top was 'new'.

Yes it is!

An automotive urethane in either single stage or base clear will work fine. There is a lot of flexibility in that type of paint. It will require a sealer before painting and that will be the "tie" between the top and the paint. It would likely be an epoxy sealer and this would work well too.

On paint, single stage may seem easier but silver metallic single stage is very tough to make look good. Spray it wet for shine and the metallic dances making it look uneven. Spray dry for even metallic and it will look dull and low gloss. The trick is to spray a couple of full wet coats with a slow reducer then dust it from a distance when it is barely flashed and it will melt in even.

Or just base/clear it :)
