So I just wanted to say that it may be a good idea to replace your pulleys if your rig is high mileage. I had a bearing fail in my fan clutch pulley plus the idler pulley has play in it as well as the tension adjust pulley. I was stranded due the failure. The fan clutch pulley showed no signs of distress. It just failed my mileage is right at 180,000.

Agree. If you can do it, replace all of the idlers and pulleys at the timing belt service. It might be overkill, but a great time to do it.

At my 90k I replaced every moving part with the exception of the fan bracket because of the cost.

Recently I did the 2nd 90K PM albeit just a bit behind schedule at 214k and change. The crankshaft pulley's rubber damper was cracked around the perimeter. And although no one to the best of my and Sam Stewart's knowledge has heard of one separating on a 2UZ-FE I opted to be fully on the PM side of this equation and replaced it with new.

Per Ali: He's seen a crankshaft pulley on a 60 or an 80, I believe, destroy itself...so that was enough to make me lighten my wallet

I've seen both 60 and 80 demolished. One I pulled off this weekend (SE US truck) was in fine shape.

I couldn't tell if they were worn out, or still in great shape. They seems to be in good shape, but I have never really inspected one. They were smooth, and shiny...in my books, that's great!

Ya, but that particular "SE US truck" was only driven to church on Sundays and occasionally to a few good sales at Macy's. ;)

I purchased that bracket and it was spendy. My intention is also to replace all moving parts on the outside of the engine. I have the common serp belt chirp on cold mornings as well as a harmonic vibration when the A/C is on.

Fan bracket pulley is the one that s*** the bed and yes its damn expensive :bang:

I messaged Dan a couple times but have not heard back. Will tell service writer when I see him Friday. Didn't get to see Dan because my truck didn't get to American Toyota till 10:30 Monday night. AAA said 8:30 so yeah they were a little off on their estimate not that Dan would have been there at 8:30. Will stop in Friday when I pickup truck.

I knew Toyota pulleys were spendy but damn that's an expensive pulley and it looked like a pain to replace to boot. What was interesting was the service writer say it is three hours of labor and that seems light to me. I mean you have to pull the fan clutch off which means the shroud has to come off too. It looked like the air cleaner needed to be pulled as well to get down in there. No idea what needs to be done to remove the tensioner pulley as well.

I just replaced both pulleys last weekend. The Idler had already gone dry several thousand miles ago but I had regreased it twice since then and it's been O.K. and is still good. The tensioner pulley was dry and ready to burn out at about 148,000 miles. I regreased that one as well and saved them both for spares. I keep them stashed in the tool compartment along with the original old fan belt.
The new ones were around $45 a piece.

Idler pulley is definitely the cheapest to change first. I would also replace the entire tensioner assembly to do it right.
