Hi guys,

Had a look for similar topics and struggled to find, so apologies if this is a duplicate.
My clutch is on its way out. Doing slippy things when I try to back up my admittedly very steep driveway. Never changed a clutch before, but on the advice of colleagues, I was going to do the rear crankshaft oil seal and front gearbox seal while I was in there. Online Auto Parts have warned me that the seal size changes after 09/1985. My vehicle is a 1985 BJ70, but I have no idea of the month it was built, and my NZTA reassigned VIN does not help. Could somebody help me work out what the seal dimensions are likely to be?

If anyone has the dimensions for the pilot bearing too, that would be really helpful. Planning on buying both from generic engineering suppliers, rather than pay to have "Land Cruiser" stuff shipped over from Oz.

Edit: perhaps marginally useful info: It's a 5 speed manual.

Cheers,
Josh

List your frame number and the one on the tag on the firewall.
Chassis number is BJ70-0004357, the VIN displayed on firewall is 7A8H60H0794004357, but this was reassigned by NZTA I think, and doesn't return anything useful. I'll have another look tonight if there's another one I've missed.

There should be a factory plate on the firewall with a number on it starting with BJ

Hi, sorry for the wait, been a flat out week.
Complete plate reads:

Model: N-BJ70V-MN
Engine: 3B 3431 cc
Frame: BJ70-0004357
Axle: H55F K082
Plant: A

If someone can help me decode this to know exactly what size seals I need, that would be brilliant

I cannot remember where, but there is a site that you can input your factory serial BJ70-0004357 and it will give you the build date (month/year)

Perhaps someone else on the forum recalls what site. Otherwise, best bet is take that same number and input it to partsouq for a part number as @coldtaco suggested.

Is shipping really that terrible for you from Austraya? I get parts from there, Dubai and Japan to Canada. Pretty sure I pay more, lol.

I tried Partsouq, and it doesn't recognise my frame number which is quite odd.

Shipping from Aus is often about 40 dollars for LandCruiser stuff. But that quickly makes an oil seal 70 dollars, when I can also just buy an AxBxC dimension seal from an engineering seal supplier for 15 bucks and have it tomorrow.

At this stage I'd happily do either if I was confident the transmission input seal would fit.

Did you try amayama with punching in your vin? Get the part numbers from them. then go hunting.

Amayama use to have cheap shipping, but not of late.

Save up a for a few parts at one ship pays off, can't beat toyota parts ome for quality. Why they have the reputation.

I got a generic pilot bearing for my 85 hj75 from a bearing shop, same size and manufacturer but the toyota is sealed better when you put them side by side for example.
Definitely the clutch throw out bearings are different sizes from early to late. Most clutch kits come with the late throw out bearing, so I had to order the toyota one seperately. Even that has changed a bit in shape but at least the same size. Takes some time to harvest everything.

Virtually all the toyota parts are just better quality than aftermarket, they usually last a long time. I am not always a toyota purist but have been burnt from some aftermarket stuff. Another classic example is the toyota rocker cover gasket is heaps better rubber than the aftermarket ones, chalk and cheese literally.

Now I only go aftermarket if the toyota one is no longer available, or a hefty price diff. Even then, a much cheaper aftermarket drive shaft had smaller yoke access so a socket could not fit on the bolts...another example, not thought out, so I have to put the old toyota yokes on the new aftermarket shaft.....

The simple solution is to buy both the seals (and front cover gaskets) to have on hand. The parts are $3 US from Amayama -japan. When you pull transmission back you will see the machined cast cover either has “ears” for oil penetration at 10 o’clock and 14 o’clock on the upper portion of cover which shows you have a later transmission.

Hello,

You can try ToyoDIY.com.

You can enter the frame number and get the information you need.

Thanks for all the help team, and the patience through my ignorance of old cars.

ToyoDIY did the trick!

For reference, I'm ordering a 90311-32013 transmission front oil seal, and a 90311-95003 engine real oil seal.

I've been using the following site for many years now and always found what I needed. Managed to find your exact model code under 'Japan' market, so this should take you directly there:

I like how easy and organised it is, or maybe I just got used to it. Anyway, good luck with the repairs 🙂
