Anyone have the Birfields done in Austin Texas? I have a 97 w/ 111K miles and wanted to get the front axel serviced here in town.
If you did have them done in AUstin, what cost are we talking about?

thanks!

Hey,

Iam about to do one on my 97 FZJ80...your welcome to come over and see what a knuckle rebuild is all about.

I would take it to Edwin over at land cruiser specialists, or Jeff Beadon automative. 512-336-7019.

Mark,
Are you doing them now are can you wait for the weekend? I might be able to help out during the weekend...

Shawn over at Edwin's shop (Land Cruiser Specialists) did mine when I had my pinion bearings replaced. He did a good job and I have had no issues 20k miles later. It was expensive (bearings and birf job).

I did my FJ62, it not much different. ;)

I have a copy of Jim's DVD as a refresher, and Tucker74 said he would stop buy and help one night. Plan to just tear it apart on night, then take my time over the next few nights and ut it all back together. I've got the FJ62 to drive, so there is no rush. :)

Anyone is welcome to come over and stand around and "Help" cought, cought, while they drink a cold beer!

Don't want to take up a weekend, rather spend it with the kids. :)

having them done will be really costly. doing them yourself will save you like $1,000. With the recent FAQ thread, you should be able to do it yourself. Good luck.

What night? Im about to snag a 1993 80 with 97k miles. Lifted, Arb frnt. and just under $10k. What do you think? Its that or a lifted 02 100 series for $22k or a 98 for $16.5. Im all over the place. Help!
Or I just bring the 62 and you can tell me how to spend 10k on her.

I'd snag that 80 if I were you, spend the other $12K in goodies. You'll end up with something awesome....

John, buy a truck already!!! :) :) :) If it were me, I wouls not buy the 93..Just because it very similar to the FJ62, just a new body. I have a FJ62, and like the FZJ80 becuse it's so plush and has power to tow and seat seven people. It's a good match to my Old school FJ62.

93 is FZJ80 also...if it has leather it has power seats. If it is cloth the seats are the only thing not powered. I would get the 93 IMHO.

I have a 93 and it's not like an FJ-62. 1993 was the first year of the 1FZ-FE powered 80's. I agree with Henry, get the 93 and save the money for goodies and a head gasket PM.

Well I got cold feet about the 93 because I cannot get to San Antonio to look at it. I got some new pics from the seller and noted a bashed rear bumper. Prolly nuthin but Im waiting for the "Holy Grail". I really wanted a 97 with 100k or less miles. I figure old mmw is right in that I already have a 62 and might as well skip right up to the FZJ80 94 or later. I even started searching for up to a 00 just to confuse my search as much as possible. MY BRAIN IS MELTING.

Paint Match?

To me it looks like the rear door paint is a mismatch.

John,
Go check it out...use all the things wrong you've found like the door color not matching to bargain it down. With gas prices the way they are, you can probably haggle it down to 7-8k. Doesn't hurt to ask. Also, did you run a carfax on it? There's a guy that sometimes shows up to our LSLC meetings that lives in San Antonio. I bet you can probably get him to check it out for you. I'll have to dig up his email address if you want it.

So what's the deal with a birfield party? I'll atleast be in to buy beverages and "help" if it's in Austin. I want to rebuild mine soon and maybe as soon as next week after the 8th. If nothing comes together by this weekend, I'll plan on doing mine next week and anyone is welcome to come to Waco and join me, help, watch or work on thiers.

Call Joe at Flamingo Automotive on Guadalupe, they just did mine on my 96 LX.

how much was the charge?

Definately go to LCS in pflugerville. They by far have cheapest labor per hour. They usually go close to what the book lists on labor, but will usually cut a few hours off if they can. I think you could get it all done for 800$ in labor there. Maybe even less, considering they replaced both my differential gaskets for me for 650. That requires pulling both birfs, and pulling rear axles. All you have to ad in is cleaning everything out and then putting it back together with new parts. I would guess a few more hours of labor. Bearings will run around 200 if I remember correctly and a rebuild kit will run about the same, so 400$ for parts. That could be off. So if im right about parts, you could get it all done for 1200$.
