1991 fJ80. The front axles move in and out about 3/4 of an inch. I don't know if this is normal or if there is something missing interally. The problem is that the dust cap wont stay on when the axle moves out. One of the photos shows axle in, and the other with axle pulled out. The original wheels had center cap that held dust cap in place, but when I swapped wheels, the dust cap wont stay on by itself. Has anyone else had this problem? How to fix it?

Thanks

Are you the original owner? Looks like to me that some body use a longer style birf('94+) with an earlier style drive flange('91-'93). That is not right. Any noise coming from the knuckle? Unless the circlip on the inner broke, the birf is slinging in and out and probably eating up the brass bushing on the spindle. Could be ugly. How long has it been running like this? I could be wrong but that is definitly not right. Good luck...

looks like a long birfield to me, i will suggest to replace the brass bushing too....

X2 I agree, you got the wrong stuff in there !

Most likely all you need is the later style drive flange and cap. I have never seen this cause any other issue.

Wardrobe malfunction.

Late birf with an early drive flange.

As long as the birf has not been dancing around for an extended period of time a late drive flange should take care of it.

Thanks guys. I was afraid of something like that. Is there any way to verify wrong birfields? Part number, etc? I just purchased the truck and previous owner had the birfields redone at what I consider a reputable land cruiser shop. I am going to contact them and see if they can shed light on the subject. FYI, I have been driving it for a month with no issues other than what I mentioned already.

CDan, can you give me the cost of new drive flanges? I'm guessing gaskets also. Any other parts at same time?

Thanks

I had this same issue when I bought my cruiser, The newer style drive flange fixed it $45-$55ish if I recall.

Out of interest how much movement should one expect when it's all correct, and how much with the wrong flange/birf combo ?

My 93 has more movement than my 96, but I'd say it's more like 1/4" or 3/8" ?

TIA - JB

That much movement is what you get with the tall birf/short flange combination. The tall birf is 7mm longer than the short one.

Tall flanges list for $57.73 each and I sell them to mudders for $43.30 each. Gaskets are $1.37 a rattle.

Tall flange part# is 43421-60040.

Damn... makes sense though.... it never felt quite right.

Thanks Dan. I may be calling you when my friend in Chicago "aka parts courier" is next headed over here....

Measured mine over the weekend with a vernier - 10mm from the outer face of the flange to the inner face of the circlip. Ooops.

Get a 43421-60040 flange.

Hey Boss, I thought the difference was 8mm between the two:

246.5 for the later 43405-60070
238.5 for the earlier 43405-60120

That's the measurement I used on my new snap ring grooves on the later birfs and the shorter ones come in exactly at 238.5

:)

Beno questioning Dan...You might want to check your Head Gasket :p

He already did it. But, another could be arranged.

You are correct. the actual difference, per the catalog, is 8mm.

The 7mm measurement was from the back of my mind and was a crude measurement taken from two drive flanges on a bench quite some time ago (before the dimension was added to the catalog text).

You have seen my plastic ruler so I'm sure you can imagine the margin-of-error.....:hillbilly:
