Front Axle Rebuild Party - Shunt Cave 1.0

Would it be a bad idea to pressure wash the front end before making the trip? Don't want to mess anything up.

Ordering my kit hopefully today w/ new wheel bearings. I've been reading through this thread so I have some idea of what I'm getting myself into. A couple quick question: do I need all of the grease/fluid/etc. in this image? i.e. Do I need 7 quarts of gear lube, and 5 tubes of lube? And what are those bottles of RedLine MT-?? I also read it's recommended to get a couple extra axle seals. Anything else anybody recommends?

I bought 6 qts of gear oil, 2 of the big(~14oz)cans of moly, and one can of red wheel bearing grease. If I need more someone chime in.

Sigg you are welcome to use the wheel bearing grease I bought. Red n tacky if it matters. In my experience we won't use much and no point in buying more. I'll bring the bearing greaser to make life a bit easier on us. I did not see the toothpaste style tubes of moly so bought a couple tubs of it. not sure why you would buy extra axle seals. I've never messed one up on any of the other axles I've built but watch me mess one up.

If you buy the Marlin Inner axle seals, you CAN'T mess them up, they're amazing.

BTW, I have an inner axle seal that was messed up at GSMTR a few years ago. I only know I still have it because I found it in my pelican case this weekend at another event, so yeah, I can attest, they CAN be messed up trying to install the factory ones.

Cool. Go have THOSE people host a front axle party where you're not installing them. I like them. They're the best thing since sliced bread in my opinion. I've got an Oreillys unit that keeps popping out on my passenger side every time I go in (3 times now in the last 6 weeks) and I bet it's out next week when I go in again. I need to order a handful of the Marlin seals myself, actually.

I get 50% off shipping at Marlin Crawler if I add a second inner axle seal to my cart, essentially making that second seal free. So, I'll have two extras with me when I come in case anyone buggers one up and needs an extra. I'd rather have the $9 insurance, myself. After just recently rebuilding the suspension in my Volvo, I've learned that if something can be done…there's a strong chance I'll do it. Thanks for the wheel bearing grease offer, girupb. I'll pick up some moly and the gear oil. Any specific recommendations on the gear oil?

for the gear oil I would get something cheap, run it for a little while and then change it again soon to flush some more of the inevitable gunk that will be in there out. Probably just use something cheap the second time too so you are more likely to change it.

I just got an invitation to my neice's first birthday party…on the 11th. I didn't think they were gonna do anything, but they made a late decision, and now I'm stuck. I thought I was green light. Life gets in the way of life. No worries. The NEXT weekend is Fathers Day, then the NEXT weekend, I've got something. The following weekend after that is 4th of July, so on and so forth. So, ya'll tell me.
I had a lot of folks without cruisers who were going to come out and hang out. I really had no idea they were, but they've told me at rides they were. They had seen the FB event I created and thought it would be fun. I doubt with all the date changes that we'll have a crowd now. But if the date changing makes it so we'll have MORE trucks being worked on... then that was the REAL point in the front axle party. So I don't min changing the date.

Be prepared with your own grease is my suggestion.

You can use my pressure washer to pressure wash the axle off pavement before you tear in to it. That should cut down on the need for a lot of simple green if you only want to bring one spray bottle of it.
Bring LOTS of paper towels. And buckets to collect your own oil/grease. You're taking that with you when you leave. It doesn't stay here.
