I've got a 2000 model 100 with an OME lift (Slee-style 1.5" heavy load, level stance spec. lift), and it looks like I may have another bad front half-shaft. Since I'm wanting to perform a more long-life fix this time, short of going back with genuine Toyota CV axles, is there a more robust axle assembly out there for our 100s (you know, like Longfields / RCVs for 80s)? I've had bad luck with parts store aftermarket axles living with lifts on various 100s - and let's face it, at only 1.5", I don't exactly have an outrageous lift on this truck - but I also hate spending the exorbitant price Toyota gets for their OEM shafts.

Anyone know of a solution, whether it be an improved shaft/CV or at least some type of better parts store shafts? Granted, these do have a good warranty (that I can use to replace these), but it's a PITA to have to do that periodically. I just want to find some affordable shafts that won't start clicking and/or vibrating within 5,000 miles of installing them.....they may not exist, but I'm betting someone on this forum will know for sure.

Thanks.

From my experience, many folks have attempted the lower cost alternative and have come back to OEM. Unfortunately, not enough 100s running around for anyone to make "good" aftermarket upgraded axles. I think that @spressomon gave it shot, but came up empty with RCV.

Do you have a diff drop in there?
Yeah, that's why I'm surprised I've had so many problems.

Bottom line is: I'm afraid blucruiser's assessment is right on.......I was just hoping to learn someone had found another alternative to OEM...

Just the various Chinese $150 half-shafts rebrands sold by any number of people -- which it sounds like you've had your fill of. If RCV did have something for the 100, it would be $1k/side though judging by their other IFS offerings.

So OEM looks cheap and as long as you keep the boots in shape should last 2x/3x longer than aftermarket. So really if you're paying $300 every 50k and can get 3x with OE then you break even with less drama

When so many lift theirs with a differential drop and screw clamps without much trouble, you must have an issue not yet identified. The axle shafts at national auto parts stores are not comparable to Toyota's. Research will confirm the difference. If your trouble is related to after market shafts suggest you replace with new or rebuilt Toyota. Have rebuilt mine and haven't experienced the first problem. Have a 1.5" lift with a differential drop.

Bad, like shot or bad like leaking?

I've been running some old OEM units (they were on it at 165,000 mi when we bought it, I re-booted and they're still running at 215,000mi) at about a 1.5" lift without any diffdrop and with some hard trail use and they're still smooth and quiet.

I sent RCV an email yesterday to see if they will custom make a set for the 100. Here is the reply I got.

"We are currently re-designing the Toyota IFS system which would include your vehicle. Our R&D team estimate that everything will be ready for sale this summer. We are looking forward to having this product available ASAP. Like our Facebook page as we will have all new product launches featured there first."

So they are coming for the 100, expensive I am sure but also the best out there.

Cheers

^ that's effing hilarious!

Background here: RCV Axles?

From where I sit RCV couldn't figure out how to get out of a cardboard box...all I saw was smoke and mirrors. But I digress :D
