I just wanted to thank everyone for thier help while I serviced the front axle and RR the tie-rod ends. After rr both spindles, the PS inner axle, swapping birfs around, rr the tie-rod ends and getting an allignment, it drives like it probably did when the PO bought it new. Too bad he didn't take care of the truck. I am flushing the axle with some cheap Walmart 80w-90 to clean out some of the built up gunk/moly that has collected in there for the last 150k and will replace it after a few miles. Any ideas or opinions on how many miles would be sufficient?

Jim, the video was very helpfull. Between the video and the FSM the job was much easier seeing how I was on my own on this one. I don't work with many wrench turners and they are all on a 24hr on call also.

Thanks, Gene

Jim is currently out enjoying the Texas countryside with his family in the 80, but as his trusty sidekick in video production, I will step in for him and say we are happy that the video proved worthwhile.

I hope you did not forget to bend one of your star washer's tabs like I did on my first birf job...which also happened to be the birf job in the video. :o

tarbe,

No I did not forget to bend the tabs on the star washer.:D I bent one over the inner and outer lock nuts as it says in the FSM. Don't feel bad. The PO or who ever did the wheel bearings last forgot to do it also.

Yes, the video made it much easier to do, specialy since I was doing it by myself.

Did you have birf clicking before the repack? Did it stay a little, or go away completely?

Great question; I get one lone click if I crank the wheels all the way to the left (to the right is okay) and am guessing I could use a front axle job, so am interested in following this thread too...

Doug,

It did click during a hard left turn before the repack. I wanted to take the birfs apart so I could see what they looked like and I had already bought the clips. It was easier than I thought it would be. I used a 3lb hammer and a large brass bar. There was slight wear showing so I swapped sides and it does not click now.
