I did the Swamp Lake trail this past weekend (Central Sierra Nevada Mtns) and BARELY limped out and made it to the Ranger Station. Front axle begain binding and clanking on the trail out. Binding became so severe that it locked up the front wheels a few times and I had to back up a few feet to unbind in order to proceed.

Had it towed to Bingham Toyota who, for $55, told me that it wasn't CV Joint related and that they couldn't take it apart to diagnos because of the aftermarket parts (ARB locker). They said they put it on the rack and that the front drive line spins but no movement at the the output shafts. Had it towed to a independent shop and am waiting to find out the verdict.

My question, has anyone had similar axle problems (other than CV Joints)? Could it be ring and pinion? How bad/ how much $$ am I looking at?

I'm interested to hear what the experts say here. Hmmm, so you have an ARB front diff. Still broke something? Wow! What were you doing exactly when the noise began?

I'll update once I get the verdict from the repair shop. I was crawling thru some of the more difficult sections of the trail (see attached trail descrption) without problem, got onto a flat dirt section and felt/heard the binding somewhere in the front end.

My money on the R&P

Me too though I hesistated to say becuase he's ARB'd. Anybody with an ARB wipe a R&P yet?
I'm fairly sure, not sure whether it was here, maybe lcool.

Checked the front diff via Borescope. Front pinion is missing teeth. :crybaby: Oil looked like mud and the drain plug had alot of metal "fuzz" stuck to it. Going to need to pull it and do an autopsy next week Mark.

Course, you COULD just do a solid axle swap and be done with it! :D

Just curious: Who did the ARB install?

Yes Ring and Pinion Failure- options?

Well, let's hope my wife doesn't read these posts.

Ring and Pinion broke with ARB intalled. IV Whezel Parts installed F & R ARB- parts and labor was $3,173.99.

Considering upgrading front and rear to aftermarket 4:88 vs. Toyota stock replacement ring and pinion. Seems like it wouldn't be that much more considering price of Toyota front vs aftermarket front and rear.

Or, what about used parts. Anyone out there with an extra IFS front axle lying around that maybe was discarded in favor or solid axle conversion.

Thanks for all of the feedback!

so you dropped the cash on upgrading to F/R ARBs but didn't re-gear to 4.88s while you were in there? used parts will definitely be hard to come by and new OEMs would be some $. Looks like someone's gettin' 35s pretty soon!
