Front Axle Disc Upgrade- stuck again

back with another question...

I was in the home stretch and saw the light at the end of the tunnel, but got stuck again.

Trying to put the hub seal on the back side of the hub and it won't fit. I tried 'persuading' it by using an old race and a hammer, but still no go.

I measured the old seal I pulled out and it seems like a difference of a .2mm in diameter.

Are there different hub seals out there? The knuckle parts are from a 82 BJ42.

Where did you get your parts? I picked mine up from Kurt at cruiseroutfitters and everything fit together as needed.

I had a problem seating mine.. What I did was find a piece of metal plate thats slightly larger than the seal.. Sit the seal square on the hub, sit the plate on the seal and give it a good swift smack with a deadblow hammer right in the centre.. It worked for me for each side.. I see a bit of a risk with this method, if the seal doesnt start squarely it will be damaged.. No matter how hard/much I tried I couldnt get it to start with conventional methods.. Perhaps if one had a press a little more control could be had seating the seal..

I had a similar problem with mine. What finally worked was deep freezing the hub seal for a day or so. Before I was ready to install the seal, I heated up the hub with a torch pretty well then plunked the frozen seal into the hot hub. It gave me just enough room to properly seat the hub seal.

thanks, I'll try some of the methods above. I got my parts from cruiser outfitters and everything else worked out well, just having problems with the seals.

Grease inner hub and bearing, place seal evenly on back of hub, cover with a wood block that is slightly larger than the seal, and hammer in with a BFH. You can gently hammer the seal flat if it doesn't seat fully -

No luck. Tried putting the seal in the freezer, bringing up the temp on the hub (didn't torch it, but got it out of the cold garage and put it next to the fire for the day. I even went out and bought a seal driver from HF. The thing simply won't go in. What am I missing? I don't want to start just hammering on it, since I don't want to distort the seal, but maybe that is what I need to do??

If you're going to try the hot and cold method you really need to get the hub hot. Your best bet for now would be to find somebody with a press and have them pressed in.

You're just going to have to hammer it in, there are only two seals (pre and post disk brake). Taking you ordered the correct kit for your cruiser from Kurt, it will go in.

are you sure the hub is round? check all around the edge and see if any of the edges are pushed in a little bit.

Sorry to hear your having issues with this. There is only one hub/wheel seal for ALL disc brake Land Cruisers, this means 9/75-97' and the 4Runner and pickups too. While I've never heard of a compatibility issue in a BJ hub, I wouldn't rule it 100% out? I have seen distorted and warped hub bodies, as well as "lips" on the edge that require a tiny bit of cleanup work. Let me know if you need an extra seal (please call) otherwise they are usually available at places like Autozone or Checker too. Thanks!
