Thinking about installing my ARB front locker myself. Has anyone here installed their own? A co-worker just installed a Detroit on his Taco and basically was a simple straightforward process.

I can't imagine doing that though I'm an idiot as you all know. :D

If you want to save, I'd remove the pumpkin, have a shop do the diff R&R, you slap it back in then mount the rest yourself. Lining up that stuff is critical.

I wouldn't use an automatic locker on a car with a full time 4WD. So there is no much choice left.
And how are you guys satisfied with ARB lockers?

ARB is the only way to go. Lock-Unlock instantly. Stronger than factory. NICE!

Agree ARB has been a night and day improvement on my rig, much faster than the stock lockers.

Samo,

You don't want to lock the front locker while moving. The FZJ80 have front and rear lockers from the factory and they are AWD.

I was yust talking about automatic lockers (like a detroit locker) and how unsuitable are they for full time 4wd cars. But on Nissan Patrol it might be OK, as onroad it is driven only by rear wheels and therefore front automatic lock will never lock.

The detroit is easier due to the fact you don't have to run any air lines.

This is such a bad idea in full time AWD trucks, I don't even know where to start. Any full time locker would make handling unstable at best, even if they make one for the front of a 100 series, which I doubt.

Spressoman-If you can stand the drive to Sacramento, there is an outstanding differential guy at River City Differentials. He wheels a Toyota and is "the gear man". He has done at least 6 differentials for me over the years and has done many other local Land Cruisers as well. Stay away from West Coast Differentials. He was able to order parts and fix my FJ40s rear ARB when it got nuked when I broke an axle on the Rubicon (in Old Sluice). $75 instead of $700. I would not try to do this yourself on a dd that you depend on to get to work and other activities. Let me know if you head down this way and maybe we can compare trucks at River City.

Thanks Andrew. I found a shop that has done numerous Toyota IFS here in Reno finally. And figured out that one needs a press, dial mic and of course some experience always helps...so the $200 install is probably going to be good money spent/invested to have it done right the first time. However it would be great to hook up with you and wheel.

Never said it was a good idea...just said its easier. :flipoff2:

"Automatic" type locker, IMO, NOT a good idea...even though cheaper and easier to install. You get what you pay for....
