Front 80 E-locker

From what I have gathered the lj78 and 80 series share the same 8" high pinion front diff. Would a e-locker from a 80 fit into a lj78 axel, with the proper notching etc.

I might have a line on a front e-locker, so the wheels are turning:D

Should fit right in. I'am putting one in mine.
After you do that you should change your rear to a 6 cyl diff that didn't come with a 4.88 so you can change dif ratios to what ever you want.

Thanks Pradocruzzer, changing the rear to a e-locker is also in the future works as well. I beleive the 80 stock gears are 4.11, so I might be going down that road. I'm running 33's, and with the Hz I think that would be a good ratio for my needs (work,camping etc.)

What geras are you using?

IMHO, 4.10's, 33's, and a non-turbo 1HZ are at the edge of acceptable performance in my HZJ73 with an auto.

Hey Joel. Call your local auto wrecker and get a v6 or 4 cyl used rear third member. 4.11's are very common in the two dif's. Put it in and see if the ratio works ( just don't put in 4 wheel). If the ratio is what you like pull it out and stuff an locker in of your choice and new bearings. Your original diff is 4.88 and has a skinny ring gear and a slightly offset pinion hole which will only accept 4.88 gears and I think but am not sure that the Prado rear e locker comes with the skinny 4.88 gears so that is not regearable. To change your gears you need to buy a housing anyways. My friends with mini trucks run 5.29's and double t-cases on 4cyl thirds on 35's and bigger and have no problems with the 4cyl holding up. I know people say no way (each to their own). I also recommend a solid spacer for your pinion gear for strength for either dif.
I don't know the ideal ratio for your rig but some one on this site must.
I still have my stock 4.88 in and a loc-rite in the rear on 33's

Thanks for the insight guys, I can't see myself undertaking any of this too soon ( the wife would kill me), But Its good to get some opinions.

It would be interesting to know if you can regear the Prado 4.88 E-locker? but if like you said the housing (E-locker) has a off set pinion hole, you would need the skinny ring gear. Probably would be easier to find one out of a 4-runner or P/U. I can't remember now ( I read it somewhere), is there a difference between the 4cyl and 6cyl diff housings? in the sence that one will fit in the Prado and one won't?

Either one will fit with no problem. The v6 3rd has four ribs casted in to the housing on the out side and the 4cyl third has three. The v6 3rd also has larger pinion bearings. Go to Toyota Gear Installs
This man is a god and my idol at Toyota difs and there is an explanation of the factory 488 gears 7 gear installs down.

An air locker may be an option to look at for the front.

I have an LJ78 with a rear E-locker here... and it's for sale.

why not take the LJ78 gears and install them on the 80 series e/locker front then you have the gearing AND the locker...

(i wish someone would have brought this up when i was still into 78s, i had the locker sitting here on the shelf)
 
From what I've read so far is that the "g144" (4.88 3rd/housing) is unique, and will only accept the 4.88 thinner ring gear and offset pinion. So if you have stock 4.88, then your stuck with that ratio, unless you change out the 3rd . As Jeff mentioned, not to sure if the 4.88 E-locker varient falls into this catergory, but I assume it does .

I find the 4.88 a little short for my use, but great for off road. I would like to squeeze out about another 20 km's per hr in 5th, at roughly the same RPM.

If I multiply the final tranny drive of .838 by axel ratio 4.88, I get a final ratio (excluding tires)
a few different ratios-
.838x4.88=4.08944
.838x4.56=3.8218
.838x4.10=3.444
( Engine rotation to 1 wheel rotation)

then divide 4.08944 by 3.8218= about 7%
4.08944 by 3.444 = 18.7%

so at 100km hr the 4.10 gear should be about 18.7 kmh faster
