Well just got a call from a friend who just called me that his cruiser is stuck. they had to spend the night. He has a '78 fj40 and said the steering box broke. he tried to two it out with his duramax truck, but that got stuck too. Not sure if anyone can help out. I am going to get some things together and see get out there to see what is going on. Not sure if a winch will be needed to get it out. Getting some things together head out there. His friend is out trying to dig out the duaramax. goal tonight is get every to saftey first. If we can get the duramax out that would be a plus. Any ideas or help would be helpful. Sorry this may be a bit confusing, but I am trying to figure this out. Give me a call if anyone can help. 505-259-3169

I just talked to Rudy. He's about 30 miles from Grants. He knows it's supposed to snow pretty good starting over there about midnight tonight, so probably won't try for the 40 tonight. Maybe the Duramax if it's an easy pull. I don't know if there's anybody over that way that can help if he needs it, but if there is call... He probably won't need any help but you never know.

Well, here is what is going on so far. They spent the night out at the 40. Dan hiked back to get the duramax. On the way to recover the 40 with a broke steering box, they got stuck again. Dan hiked back to the cabin while his friend worked on getting the duramax unstuck. By the time I got here, he got it free with hours of digging, a portable winch, and three snatch blocks. the 40 is still out there. With everything on there he said it was doing fine until the steering box broke. We are going to head out in the morning, take caution of the mud he got the duramax stuck in and see if we can get the box fixed. He said the mud an snow is pretty bad where he is at, so we may have to hike to see if we can get it fixed. i have no idea what he is saying, becasue he is stressed out, so I can only get out there and see. thought i was going to have a really bad night since they have no running water because the pipes froze, no tv reception, but he did bring his laptop with wifi. i hope I don't run up his bill too much. plus i forgot my phone charger, so it is off most of the time.

Rudy,if i head out there; where would i meet you? does your phone use a micro usb for power? left you a mesg on your phone too.

I think that it would be silly for me to head out there with my tow-bar, chains and comealong with no place to go. if anyone wants me to help, lemme know; 681-8771 Ron.

I know I'm a total worry wart; does anyone else want to load up and head out there? We have no idea where to begin looking, so there's a great chance of "hurry up n wait", or a totally dry run, or getting out there and saying now what, but I'm game if someone else wants to go.

I just spoke with Dan, the gentleman that is stuck. everybody is safe, at Dan's house (he lives in thoreu). I think he even said that he was able to get some important stuff out of the FJ and they're going to head up now, I have a rough idea of where they're at. apparently there are other vehicles stuck up there too. and they have intermittent cell service.

Update: we got to the 40. The steering box is shot. broke somewhere on the inside. It needs to be replaced. We know there is not anything here we can get. best idea is to locate one and come back up another day. Anyone know where we can get one? it started to snow again while we were up there.

That would not be a good idea with the wheels wandering in the snow.

I got a call to see if I had an old steering box, just for info, I do not.

Great news boys and girls! In the quest for finding a steering box, I was talking to a friend and he told me about a Craigslist add in which the guy had misc. cruiser parts. I called the add to ask if he had the box. He ended up giving me his neighbors #. He just happened to have taken out all the neccesary parts (box to tie rods) needed, just in case anything else was bent or broken. He left his house went to his son's house to pull the parts. When we got there, he was waiting with the parts in the driveway. He said he has been driving Cruisers since '69 and knows what may be bent or broken. He let us take everything and said to use what was needed and can figure out payment later, just get the the 40 out of there. Wow, awsome to know that there are still great people in the world. After hearing and seeing Dan stressed from staying out on the mountain and being all stressed out and a wreck, he looked "happy as a little school girl."

looking for chains for my 305/70's to borrow if anyone has a set. if anything happens to them, they will be replaced. We just don't want to leave the truck up there too long. Time to ship them, if no one in town has them in stock is time sitting and waiting for stuff to get stolen. I told Dan he could use mine, but if there is only one truck heading up, chains would be a good thing. Going to check Desert Rat in the morning and see if they got anything, but who knows.

I have some you can borrow if you don't find some closer. Northern Rio Rancho is pretty far out of the way from I-40...

Not too far of a drive. light or heavy duty, Ash has a set he gong to drop off in the AM. It is a forest road, so his should work fine, but not a bad idea to have an extra set. I called the boss, I can have a half day off tommorow, and Tue. Depending on the snowfall, chains would not hurt. Second truck would be ideal. Ash is 80 tommorow. I told him he can take my 80, if he head out tommorow. what would work for you. You have my #.

Dude, you know you're not making complete sense :flipoff2: You're taking half day off so, what does that mean? You're going to work and then drive the 80 for the rescue mission? I thought Dan is going to drive your 80 up there (scratching my head).

Ash is 80 tommorow - what the hell does that mean? :hhmm: :meh:

Just giving you crap....

Sorry, I guess Dan's stress is drawing on me, but Dan needs to get a good night's rest, so he can think with his head on straight. What would would you do if you had over 10K waiting for a picking? He wanted to head out tonight, but I told him to get a good night's sleep. To answer you Q, we are still playing everthing by ear. Dan is going to call me in the morning. I can work a half day and take his Duramax up there and take Tue. off. Weather dependent, my 80 should be fine to get to the truck. But if the conditions turn for the worse, another locked truck and wicnh could be helpful. Down to the bones, we need to get up there and get get the crap put in with no one getting stuck. Road conditions, I made it all the way in just 4low. Kicked in the lockers at about an 8 point turn around. Mybe this was excessive, but with only one truck, I did not want to take the chance of getting another one stuck. Who would not want a wrench party up out in the snow. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and Dan would be more than to help you with anything he can.

to all that have offered help, supplies, and assistance, etc,,, on both the behalf of both Dan and myself, We thank you. I can assure you that all wiil be paid back. I will let you all know how things work out in the mean time.

Good to hear you got a steering box. If there is anything screwy with that one, feel free to steal the box from my 45.

Sounds like I need to call in sick, and go get the Green Dodge to get you guys unstuck and plowed out.... Unfortunately I've got 6 days of reserve starting tomorrow, and I'm pretty sure Dad is out of town. Otherwise, the Green Dodge WOULD get everything unstuck and plowed out.

If the situation gets dire, drop me a line and I'll see if there's anything I can do.

Dan

It means you're older than Mikey?

Now I *really* feel like crap... really OLD crap.

Maybe Onur will give me a blood transfusion that would roll the clock back 30 or 40 years and transform me into something young and vigorous like him. Has this worked for anyone else?

-Mike-
