I got my 2f back from the machine shop and they weren't able to find brass freeze plugs. They put in the correct ones in steel and vowed to find me some brass. Low and Behold as a birthday present the machinest showed up at my shop with brass freeze plugs and a heartfelt apology for the steel plugs. SO lastnight I knocked out the steel and tonight with a fresh tube of sealer I went to put the shiny new brass ones in. They don't fit! WRONG SIZE! Does anyone know where I can get Dorman brass plugs size 555-094? I have tried every alley and back room with no luck. Thanks Matt

Which plugs are you looking for? I have the Toyota PN for the stock ones which I would ONLY use if it's the large 50mm ones for the side of the block...

Yeah it's the 6, 50mm ones. There are four on the DS of the block one in the rear and one in the rear of the head. I don't remember when I tore the motor down if they were brass but when rebuilding I always want to try and get the best I can afford and brass seems to come with a higher satisfaction rate??

That number (555-094) must be for steel. If you have the size, just call NAPA or the like and ask them about brass expansion plugs in "x" size.

That said, I'm not convinced brass is much better than steel. It's a dissimilar metal, so it adds to the galvanic corrosion factor. If you maintain your cooling system (flush and replace coolant every couple of years) the steel ones will last a long time. And the thermal expansion/contraction ought to be more similar to the block than brass.

I've always used steel when replacing. YMMV... :bounce:

This is the size you need to find - crosses with the OE part #... But obviously you want it in brass.

Dorman Products - 555-094

Yeah I talked to ccot and they have "bronze colored" ones but they are steel. I ordered another set from another site and we will see. Living in the Midwest and spending more and more time up north I would prefer they all be bronze for the rust here is unstoppable.

Oh, the ccot ones are steel, bronze colored ? Sneaky bastids!

You might wanna post in the 40 and 80 section ... ?

We will see what happens. I had another shock lastnight when the crank wouldn't turn all the way! So it seems the oil pumps sold by some reputable Landcruiser parts houses are not cast the same way. So the last thing we did before buttoning up the motor was add the oil pump and low and behold the crank hit! So a little finess with a die grinder and were in business. Now back to the freeze plugs.

Toyota Welch Plugs

Do not use non OEM freeze plugs on the 50mm ones!:bang: Dorman and others say 50mm but they are not! Ask me how I know...:hhmm: Toyota PN 9033050018. They fit F1/2 motors. Do it right the first time with the right plugs. They are really called Welch plugs they are convex with no lip on them...Clean the block especially the sealing ring and add some Permetex to the mating surfaces. I start them with a brass drift once started I set them with a ball pean hammer and just dimple the plug in the center, but don't beat the s*** out of it! you are setting against a cast block and a small edge so be forceful but not heavy handed about it.You can see the dimple or flat spot on the Welch plug surface in the photos:cheers:
