Hey there,
So, I have been scouring the internet for where to install a block heater on my 98 Prado with the 1KZ-TE engine.
I have seen only a couple mentions of anyone doing this.

From what I have seen, there is supposedly a 35mm freeze plug port somewhere behind the starter. Can anyone verify this?
Has anyone installed a block heater in their 1kz-te?

I am also considering other options. I will definitely be getting a 'battery blanket', and an oil pan heater. Through talking to several distributors, I have also come across a 120V DEFA pump/heater that could theoretically be installed in a 16mm heater hose, so long as there is nothing blocking the path. The only thing I am aware of is the thermostat in the lower rad hose, which is why a lower rad hose heater does not work in the 1kz-te.

Open to all thoughts and information.

Thanks

Me personally wouldn't pull a freeze plug for a heater but I live in Arizona so stuff like that is pretty foreign to me.

I actually just found welch plugs in my Haynes manual.. not accessible without dropping the transmission, so i'm not going to go that route. Still looking for an acceptable solution!

KZ, I'm taking delivery on my 97 90 with the 3.0L diesel and I'm in NH. A Preheater is a must here. To bad about the location of the freeze plug. Maybe a coolant heater would be an option.

Thanks for getting back,
I ended up installing a lower rad hose heater, an oil pan heater, and a battery blanket. Even though my battery is not in great condition, I had zero problem getting it started in -30 C this winter. The nay-sayers on the lower rad hose heater must have improperly installed the device, as my coolant temp sensor is well into the positive range on startup on cold days after being connected to power for 5 hours.

Thanks, do you have a part number for the coolant heater or is it a generic?

It was a phillips and temro lower rad hose heater. I think i went with the 1.5", but I would check your lower rad hose.
here is a link to their product guide:
