I"ve been GIVEN a 91 FJ80 in great shape by a friend. He bought it new, his kids have been driving it. He's done in the last 3 years prob $3000 of work on AC, front diff and misc. Everything works except the radio which needs replacing anyway. It's stock, Yakima racks came with it. 125,000 miles. Gas mileage runs 10 - 12 mpg depending on how hard I push it. Has receiver hitch but never towed much. I've been thru the FAQ's on this site, helpful. But here's the question, if you get one of these free and are willing to put $3-4000 in it. what would YOU do?

I don't think there is a question there: take it, get it set up right, and enjoy the free wheels.

Bastard :flipoff2:

What type of driving are you planning on doing. On road, combo of on and offroad. If off road, what type of trails do you want to be able to do. Where you live may factor in.
Cheers,
Sean

I would get OME lift, tires, sliders, skid plate, and ARB bumper to start. That will give you about 3500$ dollars of damge about!

I have put more than that in my 200,000+ 80.
What I have learned was well worth all the $$$.
I could of bought a newer 80 with less mi but I would not of "bonded" with it like I did with this 80 :princess:

Basic OME lift, sliders, replace the front and rear bumpers, bigger tires, regear...

I think I just spent all your money...and then some.

Save some money and do the front axle rebuild yourself along with brakes. Before you do anything else, go through it and baseline all the fluids and fix anything that needs fixing. Take it to reputable shop and have them do a fluid exchange on the tranny, make sure its an exchange useing the tranny's own pump and not an external pump.
If you ever plan to wheel it, the OME 2.5 Inch lift. Slidders, bumper(s), etc.

Party pooper :bounce:
HOWEVER...I agree, Get al the servicing done then go from there.
Welcome :flipoff2:
Good luck

depends on where you are going to use it ,

Get al the servicing done first.

on-road : TRD seats,TRD aero bumper, stereo, lights from MOT here. wide tires . exhoust and tinting the windows.

off-road : save some more money and then go for a real lift, big wheels, sliders, bumpers etc.

a pic would be nice.

welcome and good luck.

I just put in MOMO seats in my 91

those are great seats , a bitt hard but i like it :P

Drive it to Sleeoffroad, then ask for the "Robbie 3FE treatment." If I had one and $4k, that would be first on the list.

congrats on the sweet score!

Whats the "Robbie 3FE treatment" ?

Sale it and buy a 95 - 97. Course you'll have one less friend, but who needs a friend like that anyway :D.

Heck, I'd give you $1000 profit in CASH...
Then I'd pull the 3FE put that in my FJ40
THen get a Crate LS-1 and put that in the 80 series...
:D

Where are you at? It would depend upon where you wheel what I would recommend for lockers. ARBs would eat up a large portion of your $3500. A lockrite or similar might work well if you don't have to drive in nasty weather a lot. I know some people do just fine with them. I'm not one of them though.
OME which will be about $700 depending upon if you go Js or the regular 2.5" lift. Tires as big as you can afford. Sliders are a first for wheeling. Bumpers can always come later.
