So I have a fray in the first 1-2 feet of steel cable on my new to me warn XD9000 winch.

Do I need to replace the entire cable or is it possible to reuse?

If possible to reuse, how would I cut and re-attach the hook?

If not possible to reuse, what replacement do you suggest?

I found these on the net, figure they would work
The synthetic stuff seems very expensive, I dont like to buy cheap stuff I will regret later but dont need top of the line

Do you have a local 'rigging shop' that makes cables (like a logging supply shop)?? They can cut the end off and re-swedge the loop on for you.

Otherwise, clip the stray wire with wire-cutters and continue to use. If it gets worse (which it will eventually), get some wire rope clips, cut the rope where you want it and DIY. They're not as strong as a 65T pressed on swedge, but they'll do for a while. Keep your wrenches handy.

Oh, to cut wire rope, just wrap some electrical tape where you want to cut it and use a hand-grinder. The electrical tape keeps the rope from fraying at the cut.

Here's a tutorial. Tag end should always be on the loop side of the clip, running end in the saddle.

Thanks for the info

Would you consider doing it with just clamps like that post safe to pull out a 93FJ80?

bolt-on clamps are a perfectly acceptable way to connect wire rope. But you need to put the correct number, space them properly and be sure to put them the right side up. It's all in rigging books etc.
Main downside is they may not go in nicely through the fairlead but just hang that section out there somewhere. (Will impress (some) ladies too... :D)

yes it is just as strong just doesn't look as clean. Be sure to install clamps the right way as was posted above.

Incorrect, wire rope clips have a efficiency of 80% at best when correctly installed with a torque wrench while the common fold back mechanical splice with a pressed sleeve has an efficiency of 95% when properly done.
